Blackwater Lightship are Tom Roberts and Leon Lockley. A duo who’s sound is much larger than you’d expect for two people. Ranging from delicate folk rock acoustic arrangements to a full on grungy, post punk alternative assault on the senses, Blackwater Lightship have been crafting their sound for the last two years. 
Tom and Leon met by chance in Manchester via a mutual friend. Realising they were both musicians who shared a love for many of the same bands, they decided to meet for a jam in the studio.
Tom has been playing drums since he was eight years old and Leon has been playing guitar, bass and various instruments since his teens and took up singing later in life! Both have been in various other bands but felt a real connection with what they were doing together in this project.
Soon, they were collaborating and writing songs together and 2024 saw them bring their unique sound to the independent venues of Sheffield where it has been very well received resulting in several headline shows.
In the coming months Blackwater Lightship will have some exciting developments including recording their debut EP, a live session with Folkscape as well as continuing to gig around their hometown of Sheffield.

Here's to the spirit of sonic adventure!

We play a combination of our own original material and covers we love: from Amy Winehouse through to Daft Punk and The Specials. Our own sound has been described as funk/groove but our multiple influences mean you'll hear elements of ska, jazz and pretty much everything else!

Since quitting the day job in 2011, Tom has performed over 1000 gigs and released 3 EP’s and 2 albums.Tom reached the quarter finals of the Dorset Music Awards in 2012, and has been runner up in the Salisbury Music Awards (2012 & 2014) and semi-finalist in 'Bournemouth unplugged' 2012. Tom has also appeared on BBC Wiltshire's Live Lounge and featured on BBC Introducing Solent. Tom has opened shows for The Wurzels, 2020 Grammy Nominees - Larkin Poe, Mark Chadwick (The Levellers), & Toploader. Tom has been described as a master of a loop pedal. During the 2020 lockdown Tom recorded and released his latest EP 'Three Chords and Four Walls' with positive reviews as his best work to date. During the pandemic,  Tom worked temporarily as a companion & activities worker in a residential home, entertaining the residents with music and conversation. Tom's musical influences include Mark Knopfler, Lindsay Buckingham, Noel Gallagher, Seth Lakeman and Paul Welle


Growing up, I was heavily influenced by pop and hip-hop genres, and I started experimenting with combining the two styles to create a sound that was uniquely my own. Over time, I honed my craft and developed a signature style that blended catchy pop hooks with hard-hitting hip-hop beats.

My music has earned me a loyal following of fans. I strive to use my platform to spread positivity and inspire others. I am always pushing myself to create new and innovative music that connects with people on a deep level.
