Conversation with Lleah Smith about the project FUTURE SCHOOL developed with Year 3-6 students at the Kandos Public School as a creative re-imaging of the traditional classroom, followed by the experiences of 'home-schooling' during the Covid-19 lockdowns. FUTURE SCHOOL is a framework on how to work with young people so their voices and opinions are heard, valued, and incorporated into the decision making processes. It is a project that builds and develops young people’s confidence, questions the hierarchies of knowledge and the function of the school within the community.  

FUTURE SCHOOL was presented as part of the 2022 Cementa Festival in Kandos NSW, on the Wiradjuri country where my conversation with Lleah was recorded.

Sympoiesis EP27: Lleah Smith (Future School / Cementa '22)

Conversation with choreographer Eliza Cooper about the making of the Bat Lake, a 50 minute dance work that celebrates the dark and theatrical world of bats. We speak about: the ways these creatures’ behaviour and anatomy has been translated into movement; how the music joined the piece; how the costumes were made; and how David Lynch's Twin Peaks sipped into the work...

Sympoiesis EP35: Eliza Cooper (Bat Lake)

The second lecture in the Mahmoud Alnaouq lecture series was presented by Angelita Biscotti, a tutor and lecturer at the University of Melbourne. This lecture explores the liberatory potential of psychoanalysis using decolonial reworkings of key psychoanalytic concepts such as transference, resistance and free association. The lecture discusses two cases from Lara and Stephen Sheehi's "Psychoanalysis Under Occupation: Practicing Resistance in Palestine." 

Mahmoud Alnaouq was a recipient of an Australia Awards scholarship who had listed the University of Melbourne as his first preference for a Master of International Relations. He would have been with us on campus today, but the Zionist Israeli regime killed him, along with 19 members of his family, in the town of Deir Al Balah last October. The Mahmoud Alnaouq lecture series is held in his honour outside Mahmoud's Hall, formerly known as Arts West, in the University of Melbourne.

Audio files have been prepared for use alongside or as an alternate to the performed situation of  GEMINI EXIT (beeny’s retirement). They comprise unique texts through different microphones and filters, recordings of the Transeptorgel and acoustic tests in the Oude Kerk, and midi compositional joins. Live viewers will receive some indication of appropriate moments to synchronise playback, but they are provided with a mind to access.
