This time he takes on the Slumber Session and packs in a tonne of unreleased exclusive material to deliver this beautiful, ethereal soundtrack to help you journey through your dreams. Take time, kick back, zone out and drift off. This one is special.

"This Slumber Session mix gave me a great opportunity to make a playlist of something I would want to listen to when unwinding, or to just fall asleep to. I wanted it to be able to exist in the background, without focus, whilst at the same time having elements of detail and beauty scattered amongst the layers of sound unravelling as the mix progresses.

In some ways you can think of it as a soundtrack to a dream. There are moments of calm flowing smoothly into more abstract sections. Textures build to go from sparse emotive landscapes to darker, brooding moments of tension. I wanted it to be dynamic, taking in a variety of styles and influences, whilst giving the listener a coherent experience and painting some interesting images in their minds.

It also gave me the chance to put in a lot of unreleased tracks of mine. I make a wide variety of styles outside of my normal output, so it was great to have an outlet for some of that material. There are also a lot of field recordings I've made over the last few years throughout the mix, including some from my travels. The opening section of music features the sounds of walks in Sydney and San Francisco, which at the time was just some subconscious grabbing of sound recordings without any kind of artistic purpose - it just sounded cool at the time. It seemed fitting when I realised where the sounds were from, as the mix would have been the perfect playlist for a lot of my sleep deprived travels.

I ended up getting so involved putting together this mix that there's a lot of live tweaks of outboard reverb and delay units layered on certain tracks to try and get the sense of space I wanted to achieve and give the mix some breathing space. I find that ambient music can be incredibly beautiful and achieve the range of emotions other music can. I hope that you enjoy the musical selection and can immerse yourself in it, even with the emphasis away from the hooks and rhythms of traditional electronic dance music."

Solid Steel (13th February) DJ Food - Selected Aphex Works

Unless you've been living under a rock recently you'll have heard the news that Aphex Twin unexpectedly uploaded 155 of his old and unreleased tracks to Soundcloud and made them downloadable for free. Starting from his earliest demos through to known live tracks, later jungle experiments and beyond, this is the motherlode that his fans have always wanted. DJ Food, a long-time Aphex fan, has been through the entire collection with a fine-toothed comb and selected his favourites for the first half of the show this week. The hit rate was high but he's has managed to cram 31 tracks into 85 minutes to mark this unique occasion and peppered the mix with vintage interview clips of Richard James talking about his music.

Born and raised in Finland, Esa started composing music back in 1994 and was confused, to say the least, at first. With a lot of help from his peers, he figured out how to make beats using trackers and eventually sequencers, and started releasing on net labels and labels like the London-based deFocus, Miami-based Merck, Monotonik, Kahvi and, later on, the trifecta of U-Cover, SLSK Records and Psychonavigation. His debut album, Container, is still an albatross around his neck - a track like Thor's Magic Bathtub will probably never vanish from the hearts of true lovers of innocent, joyful tunes. Having always been compared to the original three-member The Black Dog, Plaid and early melodic Aphex Twin, Mr. Ruoho never actually vanished from the scene, post-Container (or Post-Showcase, for that matter), instead took to Bandcamp and self-releasing.  One day things will change. Let's know for a fact that it is today.

THE MIX:
It was a case of selecting my fave tracks from around the years, tunes I would have been playing for quite some time (think: on endless repeat) from my favorite artists. Also tracks that I would hear once and just know they are the ones I'll play and hold on to for quite some time. And some extra-new (to me) tunes. No beat matching was attempted since Danny let me off the hook 
I hope you can tune onto this and that it will transport you to a chilled Sunday morning.
