Who are your musical inspirations and mentors?  It is so important for musicians to have mentors and true inspirations, who have helped shape the music each of us creates and plays.   I've done 8 tributes so far for SoundCloud for some of my very favorites - Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Paco de Lucia, Carlos Santana, McCoy Tyner, Joe Zawinul and even SoundCloud's own Tom Adams.  Several of the tunes here include other fine SC musicians - Joe Bongiovanni on guitar on the Santana and Justin Valente on guitar in our tribute to Tom Adams. Senor Carlos - A Tribute to Santana with Joe Bongiovanni / guitar

We had a blast pulling this together.  Its a simple blues/gospel riff on organ in F, that sets up some wonderful opportunities for heavy jams over the top by Justin and Tom, two of the finest blues players I have ever recorded with.  Tom has the solos with a more treble sound, and Justin boosts his midrange and bass.  Check out their SoundCloud pages if you are not familiar.  They are bad ass, just like this tune. Bad Ass Blues - with Justin Valente and Tom Adams / guitars

Bringing a soulful sound to SoundCloud with this one.  Lifetime recording artist, soul vocalist, saxophone and harmonica player Johnny Pugh sits in with blues guitarist extraordinaire Justin Valente and me on an emotional Ray Charles type slow jam.  What a wonderful surprise to hear Johnny's beautiful harp lines, which fit perfectly with Justin's raw electric blues energy. Paco - a Tribute to Paco de Lucia

Thought I'd throw a quick tune together riding the train out to New York's beautiful Hamptons, and pulled this off with my midi controller and a laptop.  Surprised the people walking by on the train, but what the hell!  Probably the first tune ever recorded on a train:).  Here's a simple I-IV groove in C that just works (they always do:)) Thanks to Joe Cocker for his seminal Feeling Alright.  One of my favorite grooves.  Same type of vibe here.  Seems like the right atmosphere to go into the holiday weekend.  All done on keyboards.  Thanks as always for listening and commenting.  

Smile - Tribute to Joe Cocker

It's Friday so why not throw up some funk!  There is no one deeper than Herbie Hancock, so I created this funky tune as a tribute to Herbie.  Such an important influence he was across so many genres.  Herbie is the consummate musician.  A fellow native of Chicago, Herbie soloed with the Chicago Symphony at around age 12, started producing his own albums on Blue Note before he was 20, joined the legendary Miles Davis quintet in '64, and brought electronic keyboards with the Rhodes to Miles with the famous Miles Smiles album, then pioneering electronic keyboards in the late 60s with In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew.  Miles had an album Get on Up With It, which is where I took the name from - a common phrase back in the late 60s and 70s..that James Brown of course used with his funky Sex Machine hit.  In addition to his incredible influence with Miles, Herbie left him around '72 to form the Headhunters, which then created what still is the best selling "jazz" album of all time - with Chameleon and so many other classics.  Herbie has meant so much to me that we named our first Beagle Herbie Hancock.  And was Herbie amused when I met him at a party and told him that.  Anyway, here's Get on Up.  I've used a real nice backing track with Swiss guitarist Hanspeter Kruesi https://soundcloud.com/music-pictures to set the groove and then added a number of keyboard and Miles like muted trumpet lines to bring it to life.  Get on Up!

Get On Up - Tribute to Herbie Hancock

Inspirational and a mentor he has been to so many around the world.  So many countries.  Yesterday Tom surprised us all with a Soundcloud farewell jam and so we thought it would be best to get right back to him to let him know we digged his efforts for us all here.  On Payday,  Justin just takes this one home for Tom, as only Justin can.  He's picking up the organ and drum groove and spinning it around silly.  Heavy blues rock sound from New Jersey!!  Gotta love it.  Sweet sweet electricity.  We're missing you already here Tom.  You know it.  The stage is always open.....Let's hear some Soundcloud love for Tom and Justin. Payday - Tribute to Tom Adams - with Justin Valente / guitar

This was something special! This track is a collaboration between Daniel van den Berg aka Danarchx on guitars and Jamie Rhind on Organ, strings synth and bass Synth. We aimed for a kind of Deep Durple meets Al Di Meola meets Yngwie kind of thing. It was cool and courageous of Jamie trying on a loud rock/metal piece but the result is... Well you judge!

Drag Racers on the Spanish Highway - Part 1 - Featuring Jamie Rhind

Gotta love the open invitation from Scotland's finest SC guitarist, fuzzmaster and executive chef Ian Tait https://soundcloud.com/ian-tait to join him on this heavy funk rocker.  Ian's signature funky sound and outstanding Wah playing were just what the doctor ordered for me, so I jumped in with some heavy synth guitar patch to try and match Ian's electricity on my keyboard.  On this track I take the first and third solos.  Damn this was fun Ian!!!  You are back with a vengeance.

King For A Day

We are so excited to present this seminal soul blues classic Who Knows, first performed by Jimi Hendrix' '70 power soul trio, Band of Gypsies.   Stick with it through the end for a thrilling ride.   Leading our team is Detroit's rocker Tony "Bluestone" Pappas https://soundcloud.com/tonybluestone , who just nails the spirit of Buddy Miles, Hendrix' drummer and vocalist.  So great to have Tony's soulful and rhythmical approach on this extended recording.  Our two exceptional guitar players are both from The Netherlands - Marco Oversteegen and Rients Draaisma.  Marco https://soundcloud.com/marco-oversteegen just had to be a part of this recording, as for me he is the closest player I know in approach and sound to what Hendrix laid down over 40 years ago.  If it sounds like Jimi here, it is Marco's beautiful playing.  Rients http://www.rientsdraaisma.com https://soundcloud.com/rients-draaisma comes at it from quite a different angle indeed, using a very progressive fusion inspired approach to his  brilliant and unique soloing, and while also taking it back with superb pitch bending and pentatonics.  As a huge Hendrix fan, and one who has been deeply influenced by his playing, I've decided to also solo, using a heavy keyboard synth patch to try and complement these two cats. Originally from Chicago, where I developed a strong appreciation for the blues and classical, and moved to New York, where jazz and the fine arts are so deep.
