Find the Groove

The brilliant Dan van den Berg https://soundcloud.com/danarchx and I are thrilled to share a tribute to two of our favorite bands, The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever.  These seminal bands and their musicians were so important to the merging of rock and jazz, many having come out of Miles Davis' fusion band, and featured virtuoso soloists and creativity that had not been seen before with electric music.  Dan here plays both electric and acoustic guitars, and has added so very much of himself to this modal tune.  The tune features a repeating simple lick, with dueling aggressive synth and guitar solos that these bands pioneered and took to a very high level, with John McLaughlin and Al DiMiola on guitars and Jan Hammer and Chick Corea on keyboards. I'm sorry to have butchered Don McLean's beautiful song Vincent by changing the words and using his melody and my croaky voice...folksinger, I am not... oh well it was  a good lyric writing exercise at least

This is a love song written about Josh's favorite band, Phish. He came up with the chords on his acoustic guitar, and shared it with the group. This was written with Beck in mind, though, too, as he knew she'd be contributing her magic to this one, too. Even when it was just the acoustic guitar set to a looper beat, she came up with many of the parts you hear throughout. Although, she also readjusted and redid a lot of it, too, throughout the process. Ken was the next piece of the puzzle to jump in. He laid down his perfect drums beats to it in only one or two tries, giving it the groove it needed. After Ken laid down the beat, that allowed Josh to add his bass to the mix, too. It was almost done musically, but it needed a lead guitar, which Josh also put in there. Before it was finished, though, JJ weighed in with his clever organ, which can be heard from about 2:30 on. When it was all wrapped up musically, Josh also sang his lyrics, which are written from the perspective of two Phish heads conversing about the imminent Phish show, which is always a big, exciting event. 
  Josh has seen almost 70 Phish shows in his life, and he hopes his adoration for the band is evident in this song. This is the second song Eclectic Collective have done with Beck, and we all hope for many more, too. She's a fantastic musician, with a wonderfully deep well of creativity. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Cissy Strut is a funky, New Orleans type groove recorded initially by the Meters, and then performed and recorded by so many musicians.   Scott suggested the tune and we've decided to style it after a favorite version recorded by John Scofield.  We've lined up some great great players to bring Cissy Strut to SoundCloud - Scott Nelson and Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski on guitars, Mirko "Stringburner" Borach on bass and Alpha Roots with his signature djembe sound.  Scott's got the first solo and plays sweet rhythm guitar over the track, Pinner takes the second guitar solo, and I follow on Hammond Organ.  What fun this was for all of us.
