Have Yourself A Merry SoundCloud Christmas 2019

Thought I'd throw up a funky track with many syncopated layers.  I started with an internet guitar backing track and as the tune progressed, a John Scofield Uberjam  / a GoGo vibe came out - without John's unreal guitar playing over the top.  Check out John's two Uberjam and a GoGo albums if you are digging this track.  Check em out even if you're not too! Funk You Up  - a Tribute to John Scofield

It's Friday so why not throw up some funk!  There is no one deeper than Herbie Hancock, so I created this funky tune as a tribute to Herbie.  Such an important influence he was across so many genres.  Herbie is the consummate musician.  A fellow native of Chicago, Herbie soloed with the Chicago Symphony at around age 12, started producing his own albums on Blue Note before he was 20, joined the legendary Miles Davis quintet in '64, and brought electronic keyboards with the Rhodes to Miles with the famous Miles Smiles album, then pioneering electronic keyboards in the late 60s with In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew.  Miles had an album Get on Up With It, which is where I took the name from - a common phrase back in the late 60s and 70s..that James Brown of course used with his funky Sex Machine hit.  In addition to his incredible influence with Miles, Herbie left him around '72 to form the Headhunters, which then created what still is the best selling "jazz" album of all time - with Chameleon and so many other classics.  Herbie has meant so much to me that we named our first Beagle Herbie Hancock.  And was Herbie amused when I met him at a party and told him that.  Anyway, here's Get on Up.  I've used a real nice backing track with Swiss guitarist Hanspeter Kruesi https://soundcloud.com/music-pictures to set the groove and then added a number of keyboard and Miles like muted trumpet lines to bring it to life.  Get on Up!

Santa's A Psycho

A big shout out to my many friends and followers on SoundCloud.  Today marks 100,000 listens for me since I joined, and it has been a special treat to have gotten to know so many from all over the world so well, to really dig into and dig your personal playing and music, to have had the opportunity to record and perform with superb musicians, to learn from you and to greatly improve and expand my abilities on keyboard and with recording.  To commemorate this milestone I have created a funk fusion tune that is inspired by several of my favorite musicians - Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul and Weather Report, and Herbie Hancock.  These creative musicians were often playing around with modal funk grooves, were pioneers of keyboards in their bands, and created ambiguity in their music between the minor and major third, as you here here.  They expanded boundaries, created genres of music, combined virtuosity with groove and space, and were all great listeners.

Thanks for all the love over the last year !!!!  So many have taken a substantial amount of time to listen to the music I have created and often with others, and so regularly to comment and to share their thoughts and support - often in a second language for them.

Orlando approached me about playing on a tune I had released here, What the Funk, quickly sending 5 tasty tracks to me - a solid grooving bass line, a congas line, two rhythm guitar tracks and a George Benson style guitar solo.  I've worked them all in here, adding them to all my keyboard parts, creating some sweet soul jazz for your listening pleasure. I Don't Funk On The First Date

A Walk in Madrid

1971 was an important time in music, where electricity was changing the landscape and Rock, Funk, Soul and Jazz were all merging into psychedelic grooves.  Marshal stacks were often taller than the players, the players were higher than the Marshal stacks, Strats and Les Pauls were the axes of choice, Hammond B3 Organs and Fender Rhodes keyboards could compete for volume with the guitars, and the hair was even longer than the jams.   Woodstock was a recent memory, Jimi Hendrix had just passed but had moved into the funk and soul inspired Band of Gypsies period, Sly & The Family Stone was heating it up with heavy funk and soul inspired grooves, and Miles Davis had just released the seminal Bitches Brew fusion double album that literally changed music.  This was where it was at, with each of these musicians and bands being influenced by each other.  Great stuff that produced legendary sessions and recordings and pushed music forward with power, energy, groove and volume.  

1971 commemorates this time and mindset, and recreates the feel with friends from around the world who continuously exhibit this spirit, energy and hair in their playing:

A couple of words on each of the players:  ALPHA ROOTS - Alphio was the perfect choice to add his soulful African djembe percussion voice.  One of the most prolific and inclusive musicians here on SoundCloud, always speaking with a positive voice.  Check out his often reggae and dub inspired recordings.  RICKARD FROM - my favorite B3 player here on SoundCloud.  We haven't recorded before but wanted his beautiful sound and also wanted these other heavy cats to be introduced to his Jimmy Smith type playing.  STEPHEN "PINNER" LIPINSKI - one of the hottest jazz fusion guitarists on SoundCloud, bringing more modern Scofieldesque jazz lines and harmonies to 1971.  SCOTT NELSON - another burning jazz and fusion guitarist, Scott sound combines elements of the contemporary guitar masters - Scofield, Metheny and Martino - to create his extraordinary playing.  MARCO OVERSTEEGEN - no one on SC has a closer overall sound to Hendrix, and we needed Marco's fabulous rhythm playing and soloing to anchor this 1971 mood.  JUSTIN VALENTE - Justin's my favorite blues rock guitarist, and just had to be a part of this summit, bringing us that heavy electric sound of Jimi, The Allman Bros, Freddie King and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

We bring you the new Push it Along MIX of Breaking Up Christmas, now featuring Couch King Presents and Chris O!

This tune is most closely associated with the incomparable and influential old-time fiddler and 1982 National Heritage Fellow Tommy Jarell, of the greater Mt. Airy NC region of the Appalachians.

While (all according to online sources) the tune itself is not believed to be particularly old - possibly mid-19th c. - the tradition it celebrates is an Appalachian take on the idea of celebrating Christmas over the period between 'new Christmas' (when it's commonly celebrated today) and 'old Christmas' in early January. The holidays would be marked in the mountain communities of SW VA and NW NC by breaking up Christmas, a moving series of house parties with music and dancing and all associated goods and sundries.

I had no idea of any of this when I heard the wonderful John McCutcheon sing and play it on his 1984 record Winter Solstice, which I discovered around 1990 or so while exploring the folk records in my college's radio station library. The song stuck with me for years; I'd hear it played at jams and always think about learning it (I always took my tub bass to jams, so I didn't bother learning the full tunes, just the changes) but never got around to it. So when Jeff started bringing up the idea of a holiday record, I thought this would be a good tune to use to showcase the electric old-time sound (especially since I've never come across an electric version) and bring in some friends on too. I started researching other versions of it, including listening to a classic Tommy Jarrell filmed recording endlessly, and started piecing this together.

It's usually played at a pretty breakneck speed, so we slowed it down, swung it a bit, and Jeff added a swampy beat to it. Jeff did the initial vocal arrangement, and had so much fun he wrote another four verses to go with the original four. I will note that we didn't play the B part exactly right - what started out as adding a few grace notes sort of got out of control, so our apologies to any purists who make it that far. We are of course incredibly lucky to have the very lovely and very busy Chris Okunbor singing and playing along with us once again.

Funk Yeah!

Calaminus is back with a super funky collaboration, Catch the Drift.   Such a fine composition from the SC World Funkmaster, Jorg Calaminus.  He's done so much here and then listen to his fantastic piano/synth solo.  Over the course of 5 minutes, Jorg takes us from funk to some Hawaiian Island groove, back to the funk, to fusion, to 70's rock, and then back to the funk.  Something like that.  Maybe more.  Jorg's for years been one of the Cloud's finest creators, merging Funk, World, Fusion and Jazz.  With Jorg, rhythm and syncopation drive his music.  And taste.  There's always a surprise around the turns, and lots of layers.  Heavy music and a pleasure to be releasing this together. So great to have him back with his wonderful grooves.

Originally from Chicago, where I developed a strong appreciation for the blues and classical, and moved to New York, where jazz and the fine arts are so deep.
