The brilliant Dan van den Berg https://soundcloud.com/danarchx and I are thrilled to share a tribute to two of our favorite bands, The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever.  These seminal bands and their musicians were so important to the merging of rock and jazz, many having come out of Miles Davis' fusion band, and featured virtuoso soloists and creativity that had not been seen before with electric music.  Dan here plays both electric and acoustic guitars, and has added so very much of himself to this modal tune.  The tune features a repeating simple lick, with dueling aggressive synth and guitar solos that these bands pioneered and took to a very high level, with John McLaughlin and Al DiMiola on guitars and Jan Hammer and Chick Corea on keyboards. So I asked him to join me on Dig It, an original modal fusion tune, and he's come back with fantastic playing once again. Here's a fun one we've created as a tribute to the great Joe Zawinul, keyboard player with Weather Report, Weather Update, the Zawinul Syndicate and pianist with Cannonball Adderly.  Joe wrote Mercy Mercy Mercy in the 60s, but this tune brings in his 70's - 90's influence, where he used sounds and synthesizers, world class jazz musicians, and brought his undeniable influence to the world of electric jazz fusion.

Cissy Strut is a funky, New Orleans type groove recorded initially by the Meters, and then performed and recorded by so many musicians.   Scott suggested the tune and we've decided to style it after a favorite version recorded by John Scofield.  We've lined up some great great players to bring Cissy Strut to SoundCloud - Scott Nelson and Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski on guitars, Mirko "Stringburner" Borach on bass and Alpha Roots with his signature djembe sound.  Scott's got the first solo and plays sweet rhythm guitar over the track, Pinner takes the second guitar solo, and I follow on Hammond Organ.  What fun this was for all of us.

Ohio blues guitarist extraordinare Joe Bongiovanni's three word note to me today of "got any blues?" is a little like asking a chef if there's any food in the kitchen.   The answer was not at the moment but an hour or so later I was sending him this fun original ..Smokin' with Joe, created for the moment 

There are very few guitarists who can bring what Joe does to the blues - he's a many time finalist performing in the famous International Blues Challenge in Nashville, TN.  So an honor to be asked and then recording with Joe again.  Gorgeous playing as you will see - Joe's playing his Les Paul here - and I follow it up with a little Hammond Organ.

So many horrors right now with the natural disasters of Hurricanes and Earthquakes in Latin America, Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean this week.  To lift up the spirits just a little, here's Latin Block Party...

Latin Block Party

Here's a tribute to one of the greatest bands of all time, Weather Report.  Weather Report was ahead of its time, a leader in the jazz-rock fusion genre in the '70s and '80s.  Blending jazz, rock, latin and funk, they created a world music, with leading musicians from around the globe.  Evolving over time, the musicians included Austrian keyboardist and synth pioneer Joe Zawinul, tenor and soprano sax wonder Wayne Shorter, virtuoso electric bassist Jaco Pastorius, spectacular drummers Steve Gadd and Peter Erskine, bassist Miroslav Vitous, sax player Joe Farrell and percussionists Alex Acuna and others.  Zawinul and Wayne and Miroslav had come out of Miles's late '60s band,  and brought with them so much energy and creativity.  Wayne is considered by many to have been the greatest jazz composer of the 20th century.  My composition here, entitled My Favorite Weather, is a tribute to the collective world spirit of Weather Report, and as a reminder to the world spirit we share together here on SoundCloud.

My Favorite Weather

Some wonderful things happen when great friends get together.  Pinner, Stringburner and I got together here to present a downtempo grooving bluesy original, Mr Slinky.  So much can happen with the right players, and this one jelled from the start.  Mirko's one of the deepest electric bass players here on SoundCloud, growing up in Essen, Germany, and bringing that groove, that funk, and that perfect rhythm to everything that he touches.  Everything.  We've done so many thing here together, and it goes without saying that this bass line is the joint.  Taking the lead here is Mount Laurel, New Jersey's Stephan Lipinski.  Another monster, Stephan's got his Robbin Ford sensibility going, with that infectious wah playing and always tasty blues sensibility.  Together, these guys just kill this one, proving such a wonderful cross continent musicality - exactly what SoundCloud is about.  I've had so much fun mixing down these beautiful lines, finding the right balance, and getting this ready for prime time.  Thanks guys.
