Rising mega-talent Tenderlonious is a South London multi-instrumentalist and vocalist associated with the growing talents of Mo Kolours, Al Dobson Jr, Jeen Bassa, Reginald Ommas Mammode IV, and Henry Wu -- many of whom have been grouped under the banner of the 22a label he founded.

The tracks he’s provided for us layer sweet soulfulness with louche RnB and a heap of jazz. MPC, bass clarinet, rhodes, and indian flute are played live with an un-quantised, one-take approach -- sort of like Madlib’s yesterday’s new quintet and Theo Parrish colliding at the crossroads of house and hip-hop.

With the melodic insights in these improvised arrangements, it’s not surprising to learn of a reverence for the Eastern jazz sound of Yusef Lateef, Eric Dolphy, Abdullah Ibrahim, as much inspired by the sampling habits of J Dilla aswell as his studies with saxophone greats like Jean Toussaint, Gilad Atzmon, Ronnie Scott alum Pat Crumly and Tom Whitehead.

On "Caramel" these influences ripen - as a punchy, rattling rhythm track slowly spreads into a mesh of heavily jazzed keys and percolating bass. "Something Different" scales things down, matching a meandering bassline -- like a screwed version of Lil Louis’ Nice n Slo -- with falsetto vocals sweetly treated for a South London take on Sa-Ra. The extended Instrumental version cranks up the peripheral sound effects, swirling through Rhodes padding before fading into a teasing bonus sketch.

Enjoy this version of Miles Davis' Freddie the Freeloader, a classic jazz blues groove from the seminal Kind of Blue album.  Freddie was a big fan of Miles who would always try and get in to see him without paying.  This version adds some soul and funk to the original.  An internet backing track sets up the tune while I play the muted trumpet (on synth), piano and organ.   If you haven't heard Kind of Blue, look for it - the most famous jazz album of all time, and an inspiration to musicians all over the world.  Coltrane, Cannonball, Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans, Miles.....damn!


Freddie The Freeloader - Miles Davis

Bringing a soulful sound to SoundCloud with this one.  Lifetime recording artist, soul vocalist, saxophone and harmonica player Johnny Pugh sits in with blues guitarist extraordinaire Justin Valente and me on an emotional Ray Charles type slow jam.  What a wonderful surprise to hear Johnny's beautiful harp lines, which fit perfectly with Justin's raw electric blues energy. Thought I'd share a quick take of one of my all time favorite jazz standards - Duke Ellington's  A Train.  Such a classic and thought it was written for piano and big band, I've decided to go with the Hammond B3 sound.  Organ greats like Jimmy Smith and Groove Holmes have inspired the sound.  May have Duke shaking in his grave, but hopefully he likes the interpretation.  Thanks as always for your listens and for your wonderful comments.
