Smack bang in the middle of a pandemic after almost a year of no gigs, Lachy Doley decided to get all his favourite people together and record and film something really special.
On his 43rd birthday they played 2 big sets in front of an audience of 20 at Sydney’s iconic Studios 301. A four piece horn section, three piece vocal section, his brother Clayton guesting on piano, two feature lead tracks one by Mahalia Barnes and one by Karen Lee Andrews. All together a killer 14 piece band and a new highlight of Lachy’s career.

David Lucas and his late father, Bill Lucas, an acclaimed Sydney architect attended my voice workshops held by the "Once Extra Dance Company" back in the "80's". Adventurous , creative souls with no holds barred on what was the beginnings of Danse Danse. It was then called "Dance Out Of Beat" and was a commentary on the club scene that I'd very much been a part of in the "60's" In recent times I invited Annette Scott on board who has brought it brilliantly to fruition along with my longtime collaborator, Jazz pianist/composer, Kirk Kadish. Now we have a new take on the current dance scene with a touch of empowerment as to who has the final moves.

This is the lead track from the set of songs that I began with Wou-Wou & the Wormling during the start of the turmoil and chaos brought upon by the pandemic. This is also the first part of four tracks within the album directly based on Wou-Wou’s comic, The Shrike. It has been incredible working with Bitzone and Stricknice throughout the project as well. It is always cool when the everyone in the stag heard works well togehter and brings distinct yet complimentary ideas to the mix. Big thanks also to Weighty Tree for introducing his groovy style of neopsychedelica to the rut! 

May everyone be victorious at their turn during the rut.

Several weeks after the events of The Great Scurry, all had returned back to normal in the autumnal forest. Nature has a way of quickly shaking off the traumas of the past and returning to its most basic of desires. You see, all of life yearns to mate and procreate, and while most that experience defeat from the stronger or rejection from those seeking the fitter, muster the determination to get back up again, some take their spurning to heart, as if they were more deserving than nature intended, where it festers and begins to grow a new grotesque life of its own.

In a dream-like world this track finds it's place, in a way it made me think of the surrealist works from the twentieth century by artists like Dali, Magritte, de Chirico, and Dutch painter Carel Willink, for whose nephew I have worked as architect. This song is the first The Eclectic Collective has done with Mark, and we all had a great time making it with him. This song started with Mark, who is a bass player's bass player, giving his raw bass track to Ken, who brought it to the group. Ken laid down his exciting drums to match Mark's bass line before anything else happened, though. Once we had a rhythm section, JJ laid down his dancing electric piano. Once that was in place, I laid down the organ. Then it was time for the guitars, played electrifyingly by both Tez and Stephen. Tez plays throughout most of the song, and Stephen added his part towards the end. Stephen also mixed this for us expertly, as always. If you have a beverage in your hands, you might want to set it down. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.
