Exchanged Tides is an international interdisciplinary r&d project, by JanePittProjects, between artists and musicians collaborating from the River Medway, UK to the River Guaiba in southern Brazil. Funded through Arts Council England Project Grants.
They shared process, exchanged sounds, thoughts, poems, spoken word and images of the rivers they live and work beside. Resulting in a series of hypnotic, mesmeric films, soundtracks & photographs.

Mutable

A piece I produced over the summer for Pod Academy about the vOICe software, a computer program that has been helping the blind to see with sound. The software scans and converts visual information coming from a camera into a coded soundscape, which can be interpreted as a sort of ‘synthetic vision’ – effectively allowing the user to see with their ears!

Developed by Dutch engineer Dr Peter Meijer, the vOICe makes use of what is known as ‘sensory-substitution’, in which information from one sense is sent to the brain via another. Making use of this process, blind users can learn to perceive spatial information from the bizarre and complex soundscapes produced by the vOICe.

The piece explores the technology from the perspective of blind user Pat Fletcher, and explores the science and technology behind the software with it's creator Dr Peter Meijer and cognitive psychologist Dr Michael Proulx (University of Bath).

Oh, I See!

A sonic journey through 7 Alleys, where the legends of East Hull were born from the imaginations of children.  Now overgrown, the Alleys ran from the Iron Bridge, past the ghost train track, Hedon Road cemetery and the prison to the old maternity hospital. Legend says if you go down the Alleys at midnight, spirits will appear... 

Periplum's homage captures the dreams and adventures of those who dared to run this rite-of-passage. Built around 7 ghost stories and local childhood rhymes, the piece has been adapted from the company’s performances for Hull 2017 UK City of Culture and remotely recorded with Hull-based actors and community aged 14-70 during lockdown. 

We’re off larking out down the Alleys, we dare you to come too…
