The world has become bombastic. Ironically, even among the most minimalist and ambient communities. The labels trying to out-shout one another: “listen to meeee!” they proclaim, sometimes in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS, with descriptions in press releases spanning multiple pages of concepts and tales. And I don’t really blame them for that – it’s impossible to stand out these days, to “capture” your attention (the most important currency we “pay”), and to turn that focus into plays [what comes after, is a whole other story]. And then there are artists (and labels) that seem to continue their modest and humble quest for the essence that we may extract from this wonder we call ‘music’. They come unexpecting to share the love. One of such imprints remains the Québec-based Moderna, which searches the globe for the next hidden gem. It has introduced me to many new and up-and-coming composers, which have remained on my playlists and Best of the Year lists. Their latest small gift comes in a form of a four-track EP from a Dutch musician Jeroen Dirrix (he’s put out some singles and appeared on Moderna’s compilations before). It’s a 20-minute glimpse into a place behind the space that occupies the concrete jungle of the cities where we dwell. In this particular case, it is his city of Rotterdam (which I find to be architecturally beautiful, by the way), that quietly yearns for the nature which has since receded in urban defeat.

Branches came into being during a long time planned project between Tui (Orla Wren) and Cyril Secq (member of the band Astrïd). Having worked together when Cyril contributed guitar to the Orla Wren’s previous albums the idea then formed to do something further and even more collaborative. At the same time, Cyril had recorded many guitar parts, as a ‘solo’ project, that had never been released. And they were the basis, the bones for Orla to work, completely free.

It’s a duet between acoustic strings and processing, field recordings, edits and organic arrangements. This music is steadily ramifies, growing out of itself like a wild tree. The tunes woven together and untwine again as a branches shaken by the wind. It sounds focused, calm and distinct. Although everything has been done in distant places (France and Scotland) the result sounds like two musicians experimenting in the same room, sharing their background and culture.

The beautiful photographic work from Spanish born Nieves Mingueza brought the whole project together in the form of these two very special editions of Branches.

"Wanderlust" started out as a cinematic sketch, with the intention of it being a birthday gift. It was never meant to end up on the EP, however, after some experimentation I liked the track so much that I decided to append it to the existing tracks and make it the 5th on the EP.

James Maloney studied music at Oxford University and after graduating in 2011, found his own voice in minimalist composition and songwriting, which led him to the sounds and style present on Gaslight. The album is a vibrant piece of work that is built around an old piano, accompanied by a trumpet, vibraphone, glockenspiel, and subtle electronics. This is a music defined by spacious atmospheres, vibrant tones, and comforting chords, a bold soundworld crafted by Maloney on his debut record that make it a triumphant and original foray into minimalist territories. Maloney adeptly weaves a broad range of styles and influences into his compositions: gentle nods to cinematic orchestrations meet hints of post-rock sonorities, with infusions of mellow jazz and modern classical germs.

The windy city of Esbjerg, is where i've had my residency for the past 3 years. It is a strange city, filled with both heartwarming people as well as a carpet of solitude. The city is furthest to the west as you can go in Denmark, the opposite side of Copenhagen where i'm from. Esbjerg is the last city before the seventh sea.

"Seventh Sea" is the first of 4 singles, all inspired by the city of Esbjerg and the surrounding areas.

Recorded at Huset Esbjerg in Denmark with a Yamaha U1 upright piano.

Janek Sprachta is a Berlin-based composer, instrumentalist, and drummer known for his contributions to ambient, modern classical, post-rock, and electronic music. Born in 1983, he began his musical journey inspired by early Genesis tapes, which fueled his passion for complex and progressive music. After attending the Joseph Schmidt Music School in Berlin, he played in various bands and eventually focused on music recording and songwriting.  ￼

Sprachta has released several notable works:
	•	Novembre (2013): His debut album, featuring collaborations with musicians like Susanna Lundgren (violin) and Johannes Höfer (saxophone), and mastered by Nils Frahm.  ￼
	•	Grow (2017): His second album, blending ambient, modern classical, post-rock, and electronic elements into a 40-minute sound journey.  ￼
	•	Slow Piano (2023): An EP combining reduced piano patterns, drum elements, and ambient soundscapes, featured in the Piano Day Playlist.  ￼

In addition to his solo work, Sprachta has contributed music to films, such as the short movie “Asche, Holz und Sterne” by Tom Ehrhardt, and has performed at events like the Q3Ambient Festival 2024 in Potsdam.  ￼

Sprachta’s diverse musical endeavors highlight his versatility and commitment to expanding his musical vocabulary.
