Volume 70 is a new recording by Berlin based sound artist, writer, and filmmaker Florence. She is a frequent contributor to NTS’s Sounds On Screen series and holds a monthly feature on MUBI’s Notebook where she dives deep into the music used by certain filmmakers in their soundtracks (Greg Arakki, Kelly Reichardt, Satoshi Kon, etc.) and focuses on certain OST composers / era’s of movies (Wendy Carlos, Giallo, New Hollywood etc). Her contributions to both of the aforementioned series alongside her one off mixes have been a big source of discovery and enjoyment, so it’s an honor to share this mix of hers which distills many style’s / feelings / tempos into a dreamy hour and a half session.

After crossing paths in the clatty shrubbery of *insert generic BLN venue* (what seems many moons ago now), I've had the pleasure of keeping in touch w/ Nick - breaking down temporalities 2 keep that international fire burning. 

The DJ's DJ's DJ's DJ, he's the romantic embodiment of the underground, keeping shit personal & real in equal doses. From his $eminal weekly Brekstacy show on Skylab Radio to grinding out various parties across AUS, he is the geezer behind the underground. Simply put, he is the best thing outta Australia since Mark Viduka. 

He is taking over for the first hour w/ a bag of 100% downtempo OZ deepness.

MUBI and NTS affiliate @florencesa takes the reins for our latest Concept In Practice mix!

Between MUBI's ‘Notebook Soundtrack’ mixes and ‘Sounds on Screen’, an ongoing series for NTS, the Berlin-based curator is typically found paying homage and drawing attention to some of finest movie soundtracks around. Here though, Florence’s mix serves as a companion piece to a recent film project; a time capsule of sorts reflecting on that chapter.

“I see this as a mixtape accompaniment put together whilst shooting a film earlier this summer. The film, a diary piece now in the edit, is surrounding my experimentation with the 2 cup manifestation method, or something like that lol… A mix of some of the tunes and words that soundtracked my world during the production and shooting process. A sonic time capsule of sorts, wrapped up with thoughtz, feelz n fun. Featuring classiques, music from heroes, friends and filmic snipetZ of a journey from start 2 finish.” – florence

"A temporary atmosphere, like a taste, or a dream"... Pablo's Eye spent the late 80s into the 90s and beyond creating all forms of mind bending, cinematic music; moving across spoken word, ambient, downtempo, electronic, soft rock, post-punk, new age, tribal and everything in between. The Belgian collective, headed by Brussels-based Axel Libeert, has had artists come and go through the decades, passing on their words, art, and music. All those involved share a thread, an idea or passion for what they do. In recent years new sounds, ideas, and contributors have evolved from the origins of the collective. Through my own conversations with Libeert (usually thoughts on so much more than music) a sense of energy and sincerity is felt at the forefront of Pablo's Eye - an infectious magic that can be taken off into one's own worlds, thoughts, ideas, and work. Pablo's Eye was once affiliated with Swim, Malka Spigel and Colin Newman's label amongst other labels and literature, and most recently Stroom have created a trilogy of their reissues, shining a new light on the collective to those not in the know - but to many, Pablo's Eye are simply a dream, a temporary atmosphere.

For the 10th edition of our FUSE series we bring you an exclusive DJ set from CPSmith, founder of Central Processing Unit, one of the most respected and prolific record labels in the world of Electronic Music.

Central Processing Unit, commonly referred to as CPU Records, is an independent British record label, founded in Sheffield in 2012, specialising in various forms of Electronic Music. CPSmith (Chris Smith) is the man responsible for it’s existence. A respected player in the Sheffield scene since the early days of Warp Records, Chris, heavily influenced by the Electro, Techno, early House and Bleep sounds from this era, has notoriously carried forward the legacy of a city that deserves huge credit for it’s contribution to the UK scene, and thus the country's reputation as being one of the pivotal hubs of the World.

We were honoured to collaborate with Chris and CPU for an unforgettable event at FOLD in November 2019. Chris formed part of one of our biggest ever lineups which featured The Advent and E.R.P. aka Convextion, along with front-line CPU and Natural Selection artists, including Plant43, 96 Back, Annie Hall, Kodah and Osc Kins.

Chris’ mix could be described as a history lesson in quality electronic music, but streaked with modern, advanced productions from his label and closely relevant artists.

Being a filmmaker, Flo's tasteful & selective ear for music in film can be seen in her involvement in the NTS Sounds on Screen series & her always interesting MUBI Notebook soundtrack mixes.
