MANA-MACHINE 005 Birds Of Paradise

In his book 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑊𝑒𝑖𝑟𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐸𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑒, Mark Fisher wrote about the two notions: While the weird is something present where it doesn’t belong—something from outside found on the inside—the eerie has to do specifically with outside space. Something is eerie when there are unanswered questions about agency: Who or what is responsible for the abandonment of this zone? Who or what is crying out in the distance?

Katharina Schmidt’s 𝑇𝑒𝑛𝑛𝑖𝑠 𝐶𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑡𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐻𝑎𝑙𝑓 𝐿𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡, a single, longform track stretching to a near half hour, deftly captures this spatial sense of the eerie. The evolving drone is like coming upon a ruin, circling it, and being drawn inside. There are no surprises, no sudden horrors, just the strange pull of oscillating waveforms that paint a bleak yet soothing landscape.

In certain kinds of listeners, empty, abandoned spaces produce a pleasurable dejection. Maybe this is because spaces where human life is evacuated represent the end result of capital. (It seems to have withered away, but is in fact off to find another shell for its home.) What we’re left with is something new to inhabit, a new infrastructure for freedom. The subtle changes in Schmidt’s recording have less to do with melody and rhythm, more to do with accumulating color and texture of space. And so the half hour can feel like five minutes, or an eternity—time and scale exist differently here.

After years of playing drums and piano in various bands, Katharina Schmidt's solo work is influenced by indie, experimental, and improvised music. Exploring interests in storytelling, sonic topographies, and generative techniques, her music uses electronics, field recordings, and self-built interfaces alongside acoustic instruments. From sonifications to lullabies, her work is poised between formal experimentation and narratives cued by literature and pop culture, and can be heard in installations, film music, and radiophonic pieces, as well as releases on labels such as Flag Day Recordings, Slaapwel Records, and Focused Silence.

Katharina holds a master’s degree in Sound Studies from the Berlin University of the Arts and hosts resident shows at Cashmere Radio and SVS Radio.

Through the informal interview and discussions, the guests start talking about their personal imagery, self-told stories, life methods and others artefacts of the mind, which eventually shape their creations. Their visions are combined altogether along with a selection of dreamy ambient music.

Des festivals, ont eu des moments ultimes, des concentrations de joie ineffables, des fous rires qu’on ne peut en compter. Mais de ces instants que reste t-il vraiment? Que valent vraiment ces bribes de souvenirs? Était-ce vraiment réel? Est-ce important? Y’a t’il quelque chose à retenir? Que reste t’il de l’été?

Deux heures durant on retrace la tournée des festi, ou ce qu’il en reste. Les musiques qui ont eu lieu, quelques ombres de péripéties, quelques images. Peu de chose, juste une carte postal de la liesse, des accolades, et de l’ivresse estivale.

Deux heures de sons lancinants, des mélopées au coeur tendre, quelques extraits d’extase, des larmes de crapauds, en suivant le cycle complet d’un amour pour un Jyromil. L’odyssée ne fait nulle détour, du crush initial, à l’immense euphorie de l’amour réciproque, aux prémices du doute, jusqu’à la rupture. On y trouvera de ces spéculations, de ces contemplations créatives, que crée les émotions si intense de ce feu. Plongez dans ce bain tiède, où palabres et sons ravivent en vous les souvenirs d’une espérance.

Now, ahead of a live performance at Belgium’s Meakusma Festival, Hooi serves up a mix in a similar vein to those haunting arrangements.

Roxane Métayer is a French sound and visual artist now living in Brussels. She composes with the violin, primary wind instruments (ocarina and various flutes), archaic percussion and field recordings, fragmenting and reassembling them with synthetic effects. Nature becomes the backdrop of these wild soundscapes, populated by a phantasmagorical bestiary and an exuberant flora.

MICRO MOISTUR w/ Catherine Danger [Live Session]

Since 2014, UK-based label, https://soundcloud.com/astralindustries have been responsible for some of the most enlightening and entertaining releases of recent years. Their output has helped otherwise forgotten or out of print music see the light of day, provided new takes on previous classics, whilst also pushing forward new music by some of the most well-respected artists within the ambient genre. 

Debuting with a release by dub-techno legend DeepChord in 2014, Astral Industries went on to release Wolfgang Voigt's live project, Rückverzauberung Live In London in 2015.  In 2016 they followed with a 1985 recording from disbanded dutch collective Chi - a timeless and undoubtedly classic record, whilst in the same year pitching Wolfgang and Deepchord together for the very first time, with reinterpretations of Peter Michael Hamel's classic, Colors of Time. By then, and combined with the continually brilliant artwork of Theo Ellsworth, we knew that Astral Industries was a label with staying-power, and a growing catalog of releases worth collecting - be it just for the framed artwork, or moreover, the complete music package. 

In 2017, we've seen an LP by Heavenly Music Corporation, aka Kim Cascone (likely encouraged by the recent re-release of his own label Silent Records), a third LP by The Chi Factory, and then just last month a beautiful album by Waveform Transmission (Rod Modell of DeepChord and Chris Troy), with a sublime follow-up album, a massive 20 years after their first. 

The man behind the Astral Industries machine, Ario is a proven expert at plucking obscure gems from the past, or ensuring that good music gets the platform and artistic presentation it deserves. In just a few years, Ario has curated a highly respected and anticipated label roster that demands attention, and has yet to disappoint. The music is always gentle, deep and often extremely vivid, be it deeply hypnotic ambient, or gentle murmurs of dub-techno. 

With curatorial talents like this, we're overjoyed to host an exclusive 2hr+ mix of Ario digging into his record collection, and interlocking a few select exclusive Astral Industries bits in-between. It's one hell-of-a hypnotic journey and just like the Astral Industries releases, deserved of your full undivided, escapist attention.

Une chaude aventure estivale d’une heure sur le récit d’une fête sauvage, de sa conception jusqu’à son déroulement, de ses murmures, ses rumeurs, ses échos jusqu’à son charivari, son brouhaha et ses confusions. On traversera durant cet odyssée des musiques qui ont gravités tout autour, pendant et durant ces journées hors du temps, des bribes de conversations de camarades sylvestres, et les bruits engendrés par la fabrication de notre terrier.
