Techno, Art, and Technology. 


I've been involved in Techno since early 1993, and spent a lot of time between 92' and 01' driving from Boston to NYC (and back) chasing a specific sound, and as it turned out was able to be a part of some pretty memorable Techno events. Many warehouse parties hosted by Sonic Groove, Mental Unity / Electronik Underground, and others throughout those decades. 


After 2001 the Techno scene pretty much collapsed for a few years in NYC, due to issues related to the Sept 11th attacks, such as artists having issues obtaining a US visas, the world economy, pointless wars, and a collectively paranoid government. Boston (my home) never really had a well established Techno scene before 2012 or so. 


My first, honest introduction to underground Techno began in 1993, Manchester N.H. Thanks to N.E.A.U. ("New England Acid Underground", circa 1993-95) which then became N.E.W. ("New England Works", circa 1995-2001) which focused on pure, underground Techno sound & experience by hosting many epic, outlaw warehouse parties, and formed a solid base for a diverse group of people, from various backgrounds, many of which I had grown close to in those years. 


This collectively represented what I felt was my "home base" at the time, fulfilling my strict preferences within electronic music, and of course the quality of the people, & the Techno experience. A good link with the Sonic Groove crew down in NYC between 1993 and 2000 had been forged through great events rooted in a "music & human experience first" approach and purpose. I learned a lot about music, DJing & the beauty of pure Techno's hands-on approach, adaptability, & re-usablity. 


Pure Techno is a powerful, "language agnostic" form of communication and connection via a shared emotional journey that's tethered to the art of sound. Without any single person needing to say a word, a true collective experience is often realized. 


I'll never forget that early Manchester, NH scene, or all of the people involved that helped to establish it each in their own way, nor will I forget all of the amazing people in New York City who welcomed us, shared with us some unbelievable sounds, hosted some of the most memorable events, and hosted such a dizzying array of talented artists from around the globe. 


I'm still plugged into Techno today, of course, & it's health is better than ever. But established collectives are harder to come by in Boston, & many from NYC have moved on to Europe where they can make a living and thrive in it's long-established Techno scenes. 


Thankfully one of the most active and Techno focused groups has been doing great things in the Boston area over the last six or seven years or so (INFRA Boston), and doing more than I can recall being done in the last 30 years for sure. It is good to know that after so many decades, Techno is still breaking new ground in places like Boston.


I've been quite active in releasing recorded sets of my own, of online live-streams, home mixes, mixes inspired by friends, by shared experiences over three-plus decades. 


I started DJing thirty two years ago because I feel in love with pure Techno. That motivation is as strong toda. y

Van Czar grew up in Brussels, Belgium and he was very keen on listening and thinking about music. He is a versatile artist who produces what he feels in every moment. Detroit Techno and Chicago House sounds are at the forefront of his music vision. Van Czar has a special ability to engage with the crowd, he adapts to any kind of gig or event he takes part in and he loves clubby atmospheres as well as more hype events. He has played at ADE 2014 where he showcased Bonzai Basik Beats, ADE 2016 where he hosted CZ event and he performed a b2b with DantiezSaunderson at Legacy Festival (Belgium) 2015 where they burned the dance floor with a blistering set. He has managed to have his own gigs in IBIZA several summers in a row where he has played at Ocean Beach/Pearl and Es Vivé. Van Czar was chosen by one of the digital shops Traxsource among the best 100 techno artists 2017.

Van is at the cutting edge of a dynamic industry and he has the tools to stay there. His tracks have seen big support on the DJ circuit from artists like Derrick May, Ben Sims, Richie Hawtin, Joseph Capriati, Kevin Saunderson, M.A.N.D.Y, and more. On his releases he has collaborated with artists like Dantiez & Kevin Saunderson, Samuel L Session, Martin Eyerer, Orlando Voorn, Brendon Moeller and Marcin Czubala to name just a few. 

He was one of the top leading artists on Bonzai Basiks, part of the legendary Bonzai Records/Bonzai Progressive label family, with his tracks becoming some of the most supported among top jocks around the world. All this has led to the creation of his very own CZ label which is at home with the Bonzai family and Ibiza Boys with Top artists as Dave Angel, Tim Baker and Samuel L Session ...

Van was contacted by some distributors to create his own compilation label and this idea finally seduced him launching Van Czar Series with a plethora of great artists as Kompakt and its founder Michael Mayer, Gui Boratto, Sasha, Terranova to name just a few. VCS has rapidly taken off and it has got the support and respect of the industry reaching sales records. 
He also releases regularly on Kevin Saunderson's label KMS and he has releases/collabs on Ibiza Boys, Van Czar Series, CZ, Bonzai ... with well known artists like Robert Babicz, Ken Ishii, Terrence Dixon, Dave Angel, Tim Baker and many more ... 

His latest achievement is the brilliant remix of the Inner City classic "Good Love" alongside Samuel L Session with outstanding support, including BBC Radio and being played by the many artists around the globe. The very own Kevin Saunderson and his worldwide tour with Inner City has proven this one to be a winner.
