"While curating this set, I thought about how our human experiences often feel unstable, lonely, and painful, yielding our deep need for connection. This set is a meditation on how our artistic and creative practices of all kinds have the power to generate and co-manifest collective strength, and how crucial this work together is for all of us. The musical selections, for me, give rise to feelings of love, sensuality, mystery, whimsy, queerness, wonder – and a little fear too. The process of building this set was hugely formative for me; it took me quite a while to get the flow right and find a take that seemed to capture where I am at right now. Eric Umble (he/they) is a Brooklyn-based DJ, sound artist, clarinetist, and party producer passionate about cultivating a thriving local dance music community. An acclaimed classical musician with a focus on experimental music, Eric's love of repetition and extended forms made his jump to DJing a natural step. 

Eric is co-founder, lead producer, and resident of FACETIME along with Rebecca Goldberg (Detroit Underground). Founded in 2019, FACETIME builds and celebrates community through music, dance, and visual art. It is held monthly in New York City and has also presented after-hours, virtual, and late-night events in Detroit and Cleveland. Eric is a regular presence in the New York scene appearing at venues including Bossa Nova Civic Club, Trans-Peocs, Mansions, Market Hotel, H0l0, National Sawdust, and more. Eric has shared their driving, hypnotic, uplifting, melodic, and groovy sound across the country at parties and raves above and below ground. Highlights include VOID (Philadelphia), Intimät (Denver), SYIT's Techno Cabin (NYC / PA), and Sound Space (Deluxx Fluxx, Detroit). Eric joined the inaugural artist roster of the Verdant Foundry in 2023.

No synths / no samples - all sounds are generated in real time using a controlled feedback system designed in Ableton Live, played with two small controllers that have tiny faders, knobs, and buttons. The set starts with the sound of the input fader flicking up and down to get some sound in the system, and there are more fader-flicks throughout. Not heard were all the ambient sounds that blended seamlessly - planes, cars, bugs, breeze, birds...

Recorded on a beautiful summer afternoon in my friend Oona's front yard, under a large tree. This is another recording from the tour of friends' living rooms and back yards I did with Lainie Fefferman, which we called "Audios Amigos."

This music blends well with ambient sounds, so listen with the windows open if you like. The concert was accompanied by overhead planes, unseen cicadas, distant traffic sounds, and everything else that Toronto had to offer that afternoon. Good for staring at clouds / trees / stars / walls...

I have never come from a small place. I’ve spent my life jumping around from Edinburgh, to Chicago, to Pittsburgh—city after city after city. But in 2012, for the first time in my life, I moved to a smaller place. In Ann Arbor, Michigan my fiddle and I were swallowed, heads-first, into the traditional Irish music scene. Showing up to familiar faces and tunes and conversation at Conor O’Neill’s on Main St. every Sunday night provided a sense of community I’d never before experienced.

Over the last few years, there’s been this microscopic point inside of me that has started to grow. That point is that sense of belonging, that sense of friendship, that sense of love, that sense of community, that sense of grounding, that inkling of a sense of who… It’s been growing. And that is everything.
