Whiskey Disco continues to explore boundaries; blurring lines between original and edit, disco and oddity. WD47 is helmed by Dutchman, Olivier Boogie, an artist known for strengths across the spectrum, in previous releases, we’ve seen his editing on display, No Goodbye is a fine balance between original synthesis and editing panache. Thoma Cher is a newcomer to the edit scene, but has been heavily involved in a disco and house renaissance occurring in Shanghai over the last few years. His club chops have honed an acute ear, we love what we’re hearing from him and can’t wait for more. 

The B-Side is everything a B-Side should be: weird. Label staple, Alkalino guides us along a cosmic journey of boogie-down grooves. Arps, baby. We love em. SF crew, JP Soul & Anthony Mansfield have been attracting serious attention of late between outings on Roam Recordings and sightings at the famous Burning Man camp, Disco Knights. To say they are ravelords is an understatement. Their pedigree is on full display in Warlord, equal parts Arp energy and HUGE (HUGE) lead, the right balance of fun and cheese.

If you’re setting out on an epic voyage to the electronic disco universe, it pays to recruit an experienced pilot. When it comes to intergalactic musical fusion, few are quite as experienced as cosmic disco pioneer and noted dancefloor explorer Daniele Baldelli.

Produced alongside friend and regular studio partner Dario Piana, Zero Gravity cannily updates Baldelli’s early ‘80s cosmic disco blueprint for the 21st century. We think that the EP contains some of his strongest music to date, with each of the three cuts offering subtle nods to the Italian maestro’s original Cosmic Club ethos. 

A-side “Infinity Machine” expertly combines many of Baldelli’s greatest musical inspirations into one mind-bending late night workout. Underpinned by a druggy, arpeggio style bassline, the track rises and falls through waves of funk-rock guitars, crunchy Clavinet lines and intertwined synthesizer solos. Throw in jammed-out electric pianos, and you have a near perfect fusion of cosmic disco and blazed funk-rock.

The producer’s long-held love of African rhythms surfaces on “If You Drive”, where bold acid bass, ricocheting percussion hits and weightless chords combine beautifully with starry melody lines and vintage analogue synthesizer motifs. It’s Afro-cosmic for the nu-disco generation.

A fine EP is completed by “Air Lock”, in which Baldelli and Piana pepper a rubbery, electrofunk-influenced groove with cascading synthesizer melodies, swirling pads and a swathe of fuzzy, eyes-closed guitar solos. It’s bold and assertive, but also as otherworldly and stratospheric as you’d expect from a pioneer at the peak of his powers.

Label co-owner Samuel Bruce (AKA Mallorquín) lines up a guitar sample from a dusty Turkish funk record, alongside an unstoppable rhythm track. Meanwhile, dubby trumpet and synths drop in and out of the mix. Distant voices call from across the ages. Grab a coconut and keep chugging around the dance floor, as this one won’t let you go.

For the last year and a half Future Classic has been hosting a laidback Sunday afternoon event at the Tilbury Hotel in Woolloomooloo, Sydney. A BBQ, friendly bar staff and turntables on the balcony in the sunshine have set the scene for these under-the-radar sessions that give our local and international guests (often performing under alias) the chance to play more diverse sets than they would in the club. 

With a little more time to chill and converse than is usually the case in a busy nightclub the idea was hatched to create a series of Aprés 12inch releases with contributions from our local and international guests. Having played host to artists such as Brennan Green, Joakim, Mock & Toof, Lovefingers, Aeroplane, Canyons, Jamie Lloyd and Padded Cell to name a few the sound of this series presented itself naturally. 

The first installment comes from a duo that have been causing a stir on the Sydney disco circuit of late. Brendan ‘Long John Saliva’ King and Colin ‘DJ Silvio’ Prout of Paradise Lost fame collaborate as the Loin Brothers. Their tongue-in-cheek debut Heavy Helmet is a slice of nu disco glory with fluid funk and epic power-chord guitars. On the flip London’s Mock & Toof, signed to LCD Soundsystem’s legendary DFA imprint from New York, add their playful flavour which has worked its magic at the Tilbury on more than a few occasions since completion.

Being both a music and design team, artwork has always been an integral part of all Future Classic projects, Aprés being no exception. To complement the series we commissioned original works by visual artist Gemma Smith, whose geometric abstraction sits perfectly with the cosmic sounds of the records.  Gemma has exhibited in curated and solo exhibitions in Australia and overseas. She is currently in Primavera at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney as well as Contemporary Australia: Optimism, at the Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Art Gallery, in Brisbane.

Jason Peters is a DJ/Producer and the label boss of Roam Recordings. Over the last decade he and his label’s output have been at the forefront of the indie dance/dark disco movement. While his music centers around 80s italo, 90s rave, and contemporary indie dance and dark disco, you will also hear rare disco, psychedelic techno, and early house. 

Jason Peters is also a long time staple of the San Francisco dance music community where he plays regularly for some of SF’s more discerning clubs and promoters such as Sunset Sound System, Monarch, The Great Northern, and F8. On Jason Peters’ travels outside of the Bay Area he has played events such as SundaySunday, CRSSD festival, Block 9 at Glastonbury, Red Light Radio, Kater Blau, and the Alfresco festival.

Ransom Note puts it best: “Just like Jason's own productions, which also appear on the label, the music is dark and hypnotic, cosmic and driving - sounds that'll take you down a wormhole.
