Here is a compilation of pieces written and composed for a wide array of projects and clients, available for you to better understand both my skills as a composer and my stylistic range. Inside you will find, generally in order of recency, a mixture of hired works from different media platforms and industries. I stand by all of these works, and believe them to be my best representatives as both an artist and a professional.

A short platformer made to simulate the experience of playing a game on a Nokia 3310! The idea behind this was simply following the style and inspiration of the game jam theme, and so I opted to go for a monophonic sound, and using the very limited resource I had to make a tune that had some semblance of melody, arpeggiated harmony, and rhythm to keep the game going.

This piece belongs to a compilation of my most recent, and most memorable  works for video games in the past years.

ASE (Acción Social Empresarial) is a Christian business association that seeks to raise awareness of the values of the Social Doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church and its implementation into the entrepreneurial environment, as well as build bridges between different organisations outside Catholicism to push for a more morally virtuous economic practice.

"King on the Mountain" || Original Game Music and Sound

A building game with a twist developed and designed for the 49th Ludum Dare. The theme of the game followed the concept of 'Unstable'.

"A kingdom in ruins from times past foretells a hero who would bring balance and stability across the land. His greatest accomplishment, however, would also be his greatest test, for at the top of the highest mountain will his kingdom stand, defying all laws of physics. He who is destined to rule and fulfil the unstable prophecy shall henceforth be crowned the title of King on the Mountain."

For this I had to both write the music and design the sounds in less than 48 hours. Given the theme and the concept of the game, I attempted to make it sound like a carnival attraction, using all elements (melodic/harmonic/rhythmic) to help emphasise the sensation of losing your stability.

"Gravity Drifter is a small game that tells the story of Solo, who finds himself in a twisted world. After a cataclysmic event, parts of this world have been turned upside down and can now be seen in the sky filled with clouds. With the help of whirlwinds, Solo can switch between the two sides and thus search the world for clues to the origin of this devastating event. Aided only by a sheep, Solo's only hope of doing something about the chaos is to find the source."

Due to the nature of being two worlds within the game, duality was essential to explore as a theme. It made sense to use a grand piano as the lead instrument for a game that dabbles in both surrealism and tranquility, as it has a natural dreamlike and therapeutic quality, but also with the ability to be incredibly versatile and rich with fantastical wonder. It’s also an instrument that people latch onto more easily, and so the environment, while foreign at first to the player, feels more inviting.


My concept was to play with that duality by using different keys, playing styles, and overall moods, in one world only the black keys and in the other the white keys of the piano, with some slight overlap in tones, which is why I went with D Ionian and Db Mixolydian. A friend pointed out that while writing the chords for the menu music, on one hand used fifths and on the other 4ths. That realisation set the stage for the musical numbers of the two worlds:

- The first world one would have a constant arpeggiated pattern made up of fifths that would serve as the conduit for the main melody and mood, like a summer dawn that’s just starting to rise and warm up the landscape. It’s more earthy and grounded, as if you can smell the meadows. 

- The second world would have series of repeated chords and patterns in a less arpeggiated manner and more stationary, using fourths this time to cramp up the sonic space, like swimming in clouds, it’s a bit colder, a bit sadder or contemplative than the first world. 

- The menu music was to be a clear blend of the two, and to highlight this dichotomy. As such, four chords were used, each two belonging to their respective world, with some arpeggiated rolls and flutters for colouration and texture. It would serve as the curtain presentation, so the music is still, timeless, content, tranquil, positive but pensive, as if not knowing where to go yet, no action as yet been taken and as such leaving the decision to the player. 

- The portals would share the same music, being merely adjusted in pitch for its respective world. To help contrast against the world music, the fundamental tone would maintain a constant sound throughout the loop, all the while using sixths and thirds in the chords to distinguish from the fifths or fourths of its musical environment. It's reminiscent of the timeless nature of the menu music, as it's an element of the game that is dependant on the player's action, or in this case, proximity to the portal. 

- Naturally, sound design was implemented to enhance some those surreal and dreamlike qualities. Some were created with the grand piano as the source, and manipulated enough to distinguish it from the lead performer.

Not only are they a highly pragmatic way to demonstrate your skills, compositional prowess, and resourcefulness in a short amount of time, but they're also a great way to connect with other people from different departments and industries outside of your immediate field of vision (and maybe make some new friends along the way).

Such was the case with this particular Jam, which not only supplied me with a hungry batch of new teammates for whom I had the pleasure to showcase my work, but it also gave me the excuse to create a new, satisfactory, and colourfully varied list of soundscapes and jingles for everyone to enjoy.

I hope you have as much fun listening to them as I had creating them!

This is the main theme of NWARE, a cloud gaming start-up company. Based on its sound logo, which I designed as well, this theme announces the arrival of NWARE, the future bridge between the player and their game, making the gamer experience that much more immersive, and wondrous. This theme explores the arrival of the future, and the benefits and riches it brings to the player. A world of gamers joined together as one community, A Cloud Planet.

The Sound of NWARE

ASE (Acción Social Empresarial) is a Christian business association that seeks to raise awareness of the values of the Social Doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church and its implementation into the entrepreneurial environment, as well as build bridges between different organisations outside Catholicism to push for a more morally virtuous economic practice.

It’s an uplifting melody that asks a question, and provides musical identity alongside the association’s visual logo for future presentations and promotional videos. It manages to pull and elevate the standard corporate sound towards a more humanitarian, youthful, motivational and hopeful message, all by beginning with a question.

In terms of instrumental association with the brand, I couldn’t really be too experimental with orchestration, as it would deviate too much from the corporate sound, so I had to rely on more commercially viable instruments, all the while remaining faithful to the message of ASE. The piano is the key voice, with layers of textures behind each moment that ultimately breathe more liveliness and colour into the brand. Adding acoustic guitars really gave the piece more solidity and personality, as acoustic guitars are often used in local Christian churches in parish choirs when singing hymns, psalms, prayers and songs in different parts of the Mass. All the while, the strings and winds were placed to add flair and heart to the piece. For the rhythm section I got inspiration, as one usually does, from Phil Collins, blending certain electronic beats and kits with that touch of subtlety that one would associate with him.

Conceptually, the music symbolises the dawn of a new way of looking at economics, a question that sparks the debate in favour of ethical business practices, a ‘gift’ from which everyone can benefit. As of late, this music is being implemented into two promotional videos to be released on social media and other networking sources, hopefully so in the coming months.

Hello! My name is Javier Belmer, and I'm a Spanish music composer for media and sound designer. Thank you for stopping by my page!

I'm currently undergoing my Master's at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste in Switzerland, with a strong interest and focus on media, including corporate branding and video games. Comprehension, clear communication and trust between me and my client have been key points in my workflow. This has allowed me to write music and sound design for a variety of platforms and artistic formats, short films, video games, documentaries, advertisement and branding campaigns, in both professional and academic environments.

It goes without saying that I have a great passion for Music and Sound, whether composing, songwriting, recording, designing... On the side, I enjoy taking part in Game Jams and project collaborations with people from all over the world, and it’s given me a lot of opportunities to expand my creativity, meet different developers, artists and designers, as well as test both my work efficiency and my limits. I also enjoy listening and playing music. I play drums, piano and guitar, I sing, as well as have a unique aptitude for making impressions and sounds with my own voice, which I frequently use in my compositions and sound works. Ask anyone, they'll tell you I'm a music/noise box.

I’m also an art, literary, film, photography, design, video game, theatre and television enthusiast. I enjoy sailing, cycling, hiking, sightseeing and socialising with peers.
