Mattia Prete has been at the heart of Techno Jazz a new musical movement where the freeform improvisation and instrumentation of jazz meets the futuristic and hypnotic mechanics of techno. Prete has been working in this niche as a DJ, live performer and producer, but also as manager of Jazz-o-Tech, the innovative and well-known label based in Berlin and Milan that is home to many upcoming visionary talents.

Prete now lays out his unique vision of Techno Jazz on a first EP under his own name for Jazz-o-Tech itself. Three of the forward-thinking tracks are collaborations with musicians Prete admires and respects, and one is a remix from Reeko the Spanish techno producer.

After releasing Silent Rain EP as part of Beat Movement duo, Prete now fully steps out with a bold representation of his take on the fascinating techno-jazz sound. It is cinematic and expansive, heady yet physical, and builds bridges between the famous Berlin sound and the exciting new developments happening in his native Italian scene.

'Moon, Please Don't Go Away' with composer and multi-instrumentalist Alberto Fiori pairs heavy, spacious bass hits with a rousing lead synth. It is epic, suggestive, and a real call to arms before the pummeling kick drums charge into cosmic battle. 'The Bright Side' with the great French trans-jazz band Bada-Bada slowly but surely gets you in a trance. The drums are powerful and liner, but the jazz sax up top is loose and liquid. It unfolds with increasing tension before the energy dissipates and you're left adrift in space next and the sax returns as a more friendly presence. Mattia then links with jazz pianist Uri Gincel and producer and guitar player Daniel Calvi for 'Burning Man,' which was previously a part of the This is Techno Jazz Vol. 1 compilation and is a deep, dark and brooding track full of eerie suspense.

Daniel Calvi is also the collaborator on 'Stein'. It is a track dense with ideas - the train-track drums, the tortured keys, the waves of synth, then a stunning acoustic guitar solo that brings beauty and hope. Last of all, dark industrial techno maestro Reeko remixes 'Stein' into a thumping and cavernous groove with twisted synths that drag you into a dystopian future.

This is a landmark EP from an artist who is helping to take techno into innovative new realms.

Marie is a wanderer in music.
Musically and instrumentally trained since her earliest childhood she played keys in a punk band, created sound installations and studied classical composition at the University Of The Arts Berlin. In 2005 she began publishing her new electronic music, which is influenced by electronica, techno, and ambient music, under the pseudonym Marie Wilhelmine Anders.

For this album, photographs by Thomas Lutz illustrate a narrative that is recounted with my music. A person - let’s call them "She" - who leaves her parent’s house to lead an independent life. But then for whatever circumstances, she faces the danger of homelessness.

"She’s Leaving", the title track, is inspired by an experience at age 17, when I left my parent’s house and carried a box of my things on foot to my new home. On my 38th birthday - the day my grandmother died - I wrote this piano piece.

"Variation I" features a modified piano with sound built in the granular synthesizer. In "Variation II" and "III" this process is continued with addition of instruments and spatial effects.

"Night Tube" is both a further variation and a reminiscence of "Waking the Witch" by Kate Bush. Taken from the second side of her "Hounds Of Love" LP, the concept piece "The Ninth Wave" tells the story of a girl floating alone on the sea in a life raft. Voices of her family in her fantasy awaken her again and again, saving her from falling asleep, freezing to death and drowning.
In "Night Tube" I think of a homeless person who nods off in the London subway at night and is startled, again and again, by inner and outer voices. In the metaphorical sense, it’s also about being scared awake in one’s own circumstances. There are currently an estimated 59,000 homeless women in Germany.

„Without A Sound“ closes the album. With this remix of the piano piece „She’s Leaving“ I tried to capture some of the emptiness and quiet vastness of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music („async“). The trumpet samples come from a nocturnal jam session in the recording studio of the Stuttgart Musikhochschule in which I was involved.

With the additional „Threads of Reflections“ remix*, Belial Pelegrim contributes a unique cinematic soundscape with a generous and gentle atmosphere.

Die Performance wurde an einem Tag mit viel Kraft improvisiert. Die Vor und Nachbereitung forderten eine Vielzahl an Tagen. Musik und die Ideen zur Umsetzung des Projekts brauchten sogar Jahre. Broque Records geht damit immer mehr den Weg, verschiedene Kunstformen miteinander zu verbinden und somit besondere Geschichten zu erzählen. Stellaris ist ein klares Bekenntnis zur Kultur, ein deutlicher Impuls für eine Branche im Lockdown.
Der Münchner Max Cavalerra ist ein langer Weggefährte von Broque. Das für ihn eher untypische Stück sollte von vornherein Grundlage für ein besonderes Projekt werden. Verschiedene Ideengeber brachten Marie Wilhelmine Anders mit einer weiteren Version ins musikalische Spiel, wie auch die Verbindung zur klassischen Musik in Form eines Kontrabasses, gespielt von Diliana Tchervenkova. Aus der entstandenen musikalischen Folge inszenierte Tänzerin Annelie Andre zusammen mit Choreografin Anja Weber eine Performance, die durch Ben Blaskovic als Regisseur visuell umgesetzt wurde. Man spürt die Kraft, welche das einzigartige ehemalige Betonwerk „Sugar Mountain“ ausstrahlt. Es ist nichts geschönt, Pfützen, Schlamm, Dreck überall. Dazu Graffiti und die Energie von Bewegung und Musik.

The Jazz-o-Tech label serves up a second volume of „This is Techno Jazz“ which again lays out a clear sonic statement.

What unites this label and its broad array of artists is a desire to fuse the traditional improvisation of jazz with the avant-garde experimentalism of techno. Modern music needs to be ambitious. It must aim to deliver a musical message which is one step beyond what has already been heard. Mattia Prete returns to Jazz-o-Tech with a new EP that emphasises the power of collaboration. His dark, abstract Eruption EP blends electronic and jazz sounds and features musicians from the label roster across five edgy tracks. Prete has been expanding his musical horizons in recent years. After building a solid foundation in techno, he has begun to work across a wider world of electronic and organic sounds while also working closely with formally trained
musicians, plenty of whom feature on this EP.

'Solar Approach' ft Alegros rides on rubbery kick drums and has sweeping chords that reach up to the sky where twinkling melodies awake. There's a halfway switch up when breakbeats change the groove and sombre trumpets sweep across the mix.

Jazz-o-Tech is a label that draws on the rich heritage of two of the most visionary and experimental genes in music: jazz and techno. Taking inspiration from the freeform creative nature of those two musical worlds, artists on the label mix tradition with modernity, improvisation with experimentation, and create a new sound known as techno-jazz.
Modern music needs to be ambitious. It must aim to deliver a musical message which is one step beyond what has already been heard. It must take you on a new musical journey into unknown dimensions and emotions.

Rose and I saw in the night

Were dearer to me than bread.

Night after night in my sorrow
The stars stood over the sea,
Till lo! I looked in the dusk
And a star had come down to me.

The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) also set the poem that this is all about to music for his song cycle "Songs Of Travel" (named after the posthumous poetry collection of the same name by R.L.Stevenson) I quote, right at the beginning of my track, his piano introduction to build a bridge from his music and his time to our music and our time.

Following on "Andersworld" and its remixes, Marie Wilhelmine Anders dedicates her new album "Travels" to her distinctive mixture of storytelling as well as virtuosic use of vocals and instruments and pours all of it into a highly atmospheric club sound. While Marie continues the themes of her previous releases, with Robert Louis Stevenson’s poetry being a strong and omnipresent influence once again, the epic tracks on "Travels" deviate in several ways from the previous album.

Right at the surface, one is immediately caught by the ubiquitous 4/4 bass drum, which lends the album its distinctly club-compatible character, that is supported equally by a deep and atmospheric production, which is carried by melodic chords and Marie's trademark vocals. Marie’s narratives are inspired by Thomas Lutz' photographs and process topics such as travel, movement and change, and are given ample time to unfold.

While "Andersworld" was bubbling over with ideas, which came together in quick succession, the four epic pieces on "Travels" develop their individual ideas into unique mini-dramas over 9-12 minutes each. This is far from creating a vacuum but creates ample space for a dense atmosphere, depth and a subtle play with various influences. That way, a track can evolve from a dubby balearic ambient piece into an emotional and energetic trance track, as "The Infinite Shining Heavens" impressively demonstrates.

"Travels" is at the same time a consistent continuation of Marie's oeuvre as well as a departure onto new territory, which raises hopes to be able to listen to Marie's tracks on the dancefloor sometime soon.
