Takers of the plunge
To dwell in those zones between evaporation and precipitation.
Slurping up the liminal vapourourous states and clouded limbos. 

Drip

A building blip of liquid to wash over, to cut through like first the glacial melt, releasing flow to stagnation. 

Slurp up the flux n effluence, 

The gleaming release of sweat saliva and tears.

In the second iteration of ESS's residency exchange program with the Cultural Office of the Embassy of Spain, Spanish artist Clara de Asìs and Chicago artist Veronica Anne Salinas shared ideas and processes across continents throughout this summer. Over one week in October 2022, they continued their residency in person in Chicago, exploring the city and working in ESS's Studio A. On Sunday, October 23, 2022, Clara and Veronica closed out their residency with a special performance at the Lincoln Park Conservatory Fern Room.

For the title track of her album “Fast Fashion” (Deathbomb Arc, 2021), Lolina cut up videos of Nicolas Ghesquière’s Balenciaga Fall 2007 and Spring 2010 runway shows to create a new audio composition. She continues this experiment in DJ sets and mixes: “Fashion Moment 1999”, a collage of Tom Ford’s Gucci Spring and Fall 1999 runway soundtracks (mix for NTS 10 Curated by Arca, 2021); “Spring Summer Fall Winter” mixing soundtracks to Christophe Decarnin’s Balmain 2008 and 2009 fashion shows (DJ set at Avalon Cafe, London, 2022); and “Nothing In This World Is Free”, a mix for C minus using music to Alber Elbaz’s 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011 collections for Lanvin (recorded live at Soup, Manchester, 2023).

Sonic Ontology of negligence is a continuous research evolving from listening to abandoned places and landscapes reshaped by extensive intervention of human presence and exploitation, and eventually “given over“ to Nature to reclaim the space. In the process of conceptualizing Sonic Ontology of negligence, Manja Ristić resided in places that were heavily exploited and forever changed by the human urge to build, comprising thousand years-old quarries as well as present-day mega-structures, abandoned as a result of corruption and consumerist socio-political turmoil. The nucleus of the compositional structure is devoted to abandoned construction building site of the Stožice mega-structure, while layers of mnemopoetic sonic imprints are derived from an old lime-stone quarries from the island of Korčula in South Dalmatia, such are Glogovac, Lenga, Defora and Vrnik, but also abandoned mineral mines and lime pits from Fruška gora in Vojvodina, North Serbia, and other sites such is the military compound placed in the middle of the Avala forest in the suburbs of Belgrade. The poetical accent is given to the dynamics and textures of waters and aquatic micro spaces, which are building the formative/reproductive environments in the process of re-establishing bio diversities.

Manja Ristić graduated from the Belgrade Academy of Music and later also completed her post-graduate diploma in Solo-Ensemble Recital at the Royal College of Music, London. Besides performing in the field of instrumental electroacoustic music, her sound-related research is focused on an interdisciplinary approach to sound art, field recordings and experimental radio art.
