Steeped in classic R&B, garage, doo-wop and rock’n’roll, but possessed of a thoroughly modern spark, Little Red makes the kind of music that positively challenges you not to sing along and dance. Theirs is ecstatic music for troubled times, the sound of a band in love with all those things that made us listen to records and go to shows in the first place: melody, urgency, the totally unselfconscious desire to let music transport and wash over you.

Little Red came together in Melbourne five years ago, when five very different musicians—Adrian Beltrame (guitar/vocals), Dominic Byrne (vocals/guitar), Quang Dinh (bass/vocals), Taka Honda (drums) and Tom Hartney (vocals, percussion)—came together, united by a love for infectious hooks, taut rhythms and indelible melodies.

Little Red’s instantly likeable, all-singing, all-dancing live show quickly won over fans and critics alike. Blogging for The Age, Melbourne rock scribe Clem Bastow called Little Red ‘pretty much the best band in Melbourne at the moment.’ She wasn’t alone. Fans raved about the band’s relentless energy, their rich, layered harmonies and whip-crack drums.

Soon, packed out local residencies gave way to national tours, which soon gave way to slots at major festivals like The Big Day Out, the V Festival, Meredith and Laneway and supports alongside the likes of Spoon and Vampire Weekend.

Amid the relentless touring, the quintet managed to duck into the studio to lay down the tracks that would become Listen To Little Red, their acclaimed debut lp. Listen To Little Red was the prefect summation of the band’s refreshingly old-fashioned approach to music making: free of any studio trickery, it was the sound of a band truly confident in the power and sway of their own songs. Listen To Little Red’s 16 effervescent tracks were the perfect echo of their live show, favouring timelessness over reinvention, passion over contrivance.

Critics were unanimous in their praise for the record. (Melbourne) Magazine called it ‘a great, exciting and passionate album;’ The Age’s EG said it was one of the freshest things they’d heard all year.

Listen To Little Red debuted at 29 on the Australian ARIA chart, becoming Triple J’s ‘Album of the Week’ and garnering heavy local airplay. The album sold over 25,000 copies in Australia, and went on to be released in the UK through Lucky Number Records. In support of the record, Little Red wowed sell-out crowds in London and beyond, before heading back to the homeland to record their eagerly awaited sophomore record.

Working with producer Scott Horscroft (The Temper Trap, The Presets, Silverchair), the band holed up deep in the NSW bush to record the new record, only stepping out of the studio to play pong and hurtle around the wilds on a 4-wheeler. The new album, which is due out in September on Liberation Records, is the sound of a band unwilling to stay in the same place for too long. From the sly disco underpinnings of ‘Rock It’, to the winsome rock build of ‘Slow Motion’, the as-yet-untitled lp shows Little Red totally unafraid to take their pure, irrepressible pop to new horizons.
