LUXXURY SLOW EDIT MIXTAPE 2: “Never As Slow (as the First Time)"

A mixtape with an hour’s worth of just-slightly-north of 100bpm edits, designed for a sly 3am skinny dip in the rooftop pool at the hotel. Take off your clothes and those of a close friend, lover, or admirer; put on those white bathrobes (which are NOT free for you take home with you, btw); and try and contain your giddy giggles as you take the elevator to the top floor. Do what you need to do to convince the poolside bartender to let you slip this mix on the soundsystem as he leaves you to enjoy a slow, delicious moonlight swim.

No. 3 in my Vinylcast Series this one is full of bangers from back in the day designed to make your body move!  Come take this trip with me and I promise hips will be shaken, souls will be stirred.

Set the way back machine to 1998 and the mixtape that sums up an era for me. With the help of some close chums we put together this mixtape DIY style complete with graphic design work from Ray Nolan, photography by Tim Fromer, and the mix itself for which I put in quite a bit of work for those days. The Chicago underground was smashing it hard at that time and I lived in a massive loft with a crew of DJ's all pushing hard to break out into the touring circuit which we all did. And I believe this was the mix that put me on the radar in a lot of places I would eventually play. Tracks here from Blair, Derrick Carter, Constipated Monkeys, Eurythmics, Eddie Amador, and Hebert on the shortlist. Just like Shelter Nightclub in Chicago (which is where the photo was taken) those days are gone forever but the effects are everlasting. I even left the old A Side/B Side break in there! Hope you dig it.

Number Five is my Vinylcast Series this mix was originally recorded in Chicago circa 1998 and released as a mixtape at Gramaphone Records under the moniker The Year of the Dragon. If you happened to be walking around Wicker Park that day you might've heard this echoing down North Ave.

Whilst a lot of acts nowadays get famous for making tunes, it's a rare occurrence that they get famous for their DJ abilities and track selection. DJ Caspa is one of the latter. Joining the likes on @benufo and @jackmaster, Caspa has broken the mould on skill alone. His Sunday Rinse FM sessions was renowned for showcasing the best new House, Garage, UK Funky and Bass music about whilst sharing the airwaves with the likes of @twilliamsmusic, @loefah, @xxxy and @krystalklear.

J.Dub is a unique and edgy presence in the Chicago house music pantheon with years of touring and genre smashing production under his belt. He’s toured North America and Europe extensively as a headlining DJ and lead vocalist for Greenskeepers as well as holding multiple residencies at clubs in Chicago, LA, Toronto, and Vancouver.  Material at the legendary Shelter nightclub, regular appearances at Red Dog, Karma, RedNoFive, and notably his Sorted night alongside DJ Heather at the iconic Smart Bar all culminated in his eventual sets at London DJ institutions Ministry of Sound, The End, and Turnmills.  Shows at Toronto’s Industry nightclub propelled him into Canadian house scene leading to tours across the country. His classic mixtapes released by Canadian imprint Blu Funk Recordings solidified his status as an underground house standout and must see live performer.  “Love On The Line”, “Vagabond”, “We Just Won't Stop”, “Through All This Stuff”, “Back and Forth”, “Master of Time”,  “Deepest Trip” and “Too Cool To Dance” are just a few of the buzz worthy vocal projects released by dance/indie labels DFA, Smash Hit, Rockstar, GKM, Farris Wheel, Homecoming and new label home Exploited. During the summer of 2008, J.Dub joined James Curd and L.A. DJ/Musician Chris Holmes in forming electro/rock/rap group Science & Industry.   This multi-talented artist has had past projects remixed by the likes of Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak, Mark Farina, Stacy Pullen, 1200 Warriors, Chuck Love, JT Donaldson, Members Only, David Duriez and Jason Hodges. Vocal projects on Exploited Recordings with longtime collaborator James Curd opened new doors including extensive radio play in the states especially on L.A.’s globally recognized KCRW. J.Dub recently relocated to the City of Angels and has taken up the mantle of Label Manager for longtime friend and fellow Chicago expatriate Mark Farina’s Great Lakes Audio Recordings imprint.
