Quantum Spins sounded like a good alertnative sound arts podcast playlist title, at least for starters. I'd been thinking about how to re-present sounds, music, audio, ideas about sonic & vibrational phenomena that I had been listening to or thinking about seriously and now here it is. My aim is to expose listeners to items I've found particularly fertile, inspirational and essential either in that they back up or initialize my own catalytics or genuinely throw a spanner into overly aggregrated or pat systems of how music and information should be organized or presented. This is a depot for highly charged works of art, maybe even a museum but not a venue (I am not seeking submissions nor for what some algorithm deems to be similar nor to have more of the same, not at all). I put here certain works I might have wanted to make if I had had the means or situation to do so and/or things I could never have imagined before. Radio Art has undergone quite a transformation over the last 30 years. For example, there is #radioart now and there are numerous theses written on Radio Art and what it means. Prior to that there were people doing radio broadcasts. Some of that overlapped with radio theater and music concrete and hoerspiel. When I began my #radiowideworld project, by chance, in Italy, in 1993, I was aware of Oliveros and Cage using radio, vaguely aware of Keith Rowe having used radio in AMM performances but I had not encountered what I called, many years later #radiophonography. I meant by radio/phongraphy a kind of field recording that involved the art of listening through the radio spectrum to other frequencies, other vibrations, other information. Late confirmation of this as something of interest to other people came more than 10 years after I recorded Radio Wide World, in 2003, when I participated in the New Mexico Aetherfest and conversed with the real deal scientist artist Thomas Ashcraft (google his name). Only then did I begin to discover the deeper resonance of what I had been doing, beyond the fact my interest coincided with the Conet project and the trendy (late 90's) obession with #numbersstations . I have watched over the years any number of people walk right by everything I've been doing with radio and saw them creating Radio orchestras #Radio #Noise projects, and Radio improv collectives playing at festivals and doing installations. I was invited to allow my Radio Wide World to be "played" at galleries and on radio in France, Spain, Austria, Mexico (and never heard about what happened). I can thank the internet and sound sharing platforms that I can publish and show exactly what I am doing and how I'd prefer that to be heard in the real times, on point. Despite being essential to life on Earth, the magnetic field isn’t something we can actually see in itself, or ever hear. But, remarkably, scientists at the Technical University of Denmark have taken magnetic signals measured by ESA’s Swarm satellite mission and converted them into sound – and for something that protects us, the result is pretty scary.

You Are Never Alone But...

This is an Extract from the Premiere of my new solo performance "Interdimensional Generated Space", premiered in October 2022 at Panke Culture in Belin, as a part of the series (Von Antennenwäldern und Wellenozeanen) . 

A research-intensive piece focusing on the transcendental phenomenon of the Northern Lights. 
The planned performance uses the implement of self-made recordings from the Northern Lights, in combination with self-made crystal radio, plus light, detectors, and motors, to simulate a technological audio-visual version of Northern Lights in the performance space. “Interdimensional” specifically refers to the movement of energy between modes of perception. One part of this energy come from the composed mixture of “natural cosmic voices”; and another part is coming from the electromagnetic forces generated and captured in real time during the performance. The piece make full use of the contrasts of the invisible processes, to create a new experience of space, time, and human scale. 
This is an attempt to achieve a unique sonic dialogue 
between “Natural” and “Technological” world, a reflection on Nature that is imitated by technology in an anthropogenic age.

Is anyone still out there?
Well hello there if you are taking some of your valuable time to read this! As the lyrics to this (probably)final song say, its been a long while……
The last time I checked into Soundcloud was maybe last December, wow…. 
I packed up for a holiday in Hawaii, ran the Honolulu Marathon, watched a volcano erupt, cast my dog’s ashes into a lava field and drank a tropical island's worth of cocktails while watching the sunset with my wife. And then returned a few weeks later decidedly unenthused about the Cat and my collaborator.
Gina had been making noises about returning to an on again / off again musical partner. That wasn’t unexpected and was actually a bit of a relief as I hadn’t been enjoying this for a while. Our last few songs had been tortuous to finish, including this one which was finally finished I think way back in October 2022.
Cat Came Back was always a lot like an arranged marriage - nothing at all in common but we kind of made it work 3 minutes at a time. But by late last year, it had become very hard work. And as you fellow Soundclouders know, outside of personal satisfaction, the rewards for all of that hard work are not very large. So, if the personal satisfaction is gone, there’s not a lot left to motivate oneself. 
In addition to that, there were a few rather large elephants in the room regarding my collaborator that I won't go into but nevertheless constantly weighed very heavily on my mind throughout our time together and I was finding these increasingly difficult to continue to ignore for the sake of making music together.
So anyway, when I returned a perhaps brief hiatus accidentally turned into this - silence for what, 7-8 months? Haven’t picked up an instrument in all that time and they currently sit in my garage gathering dust. Took up Chess, what a rabbit hole that is! Continued running. Listening as always to a lot of old jazz. Continued seemingly never ending renovations to my house. Spent a lot of time with my lifelong friend, William Styron’s Black Dog, as a matter of fact he's here sitting right by my side now. 
So what now? I sat down a few days back and listened to a few things that were unfinished as of late last year. Maybe its time to start again. Find a new collaborator or two? Anyone know anyone who might be a match?
In the meantime I’ll dip my toe in and check out what some of my favourite Soundclouders have been up to while I was away. I'm sure I've missed out on some really great stuff.

342. Sleepy Sunday Podcast (Elm Records)

Composed with VLF radio captures taken over the last week and generative Schumann resonance.  Stretched, pitch-shifted, time-lapsed, looped on the fly in real-time on October 11, a day where time slowed down. Thanks to Charles Whittaker for bringing me to the title via Corbin. Image of alleged Aurora taken from photo on October 10 but of unknown location and we don't know if it's "ecnhanced" by being a photograph of something we might no be able to see -- like the sound of VLF which, without special devices, cannot be heard.

Heliopathy

My Body Is The Forest, The Forest Is My Body is a sound track, which accompanies the video project(phot. Jacek Jaca Wisniewsky),  under the same title, shot in the endangered zone of Bialowieza Forest.
This project searches to understand better the interrelation between the body and the forest through the
similarities which connect both organisms and to make it present to a viewer, aiming at changing the sociopolitical distance between the body of the viewer and the forest bringing it closer together instigating a more intimate relation between the two.
Bialowieza is one of the last remaining parts of the primal forest that once stretched across the northern European lowlands and a designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is home to many rare and unique species of wildlife including being the only area, where the european bison still survives in the wild. It is currently under threat from increased logging, which is the policy of the new polish government. The policy is very controversial and subject to intense debate, which gives a context to this project.
