SZYSZKA CLEANSING

"Two Cities" is an album of spoken-word, site-specific field recordings, & acousmatic sound, embracing themes of ecology, personal location, isolation, community and the liquidity of modernity, in all it's elusive forms. Ilaria Boffa lives in Padova, Italia and Jeff Gburek in Poznan, Polska. They contemplate together and apart the waters rising and receding in the wake of civilisation, the sound of living and non-living beings, disruptions and ambiguities of this anthropocene.

"Acqua Alta"

Embedded in this track is the voice of Ilaria Boffa speaking on two occasions. The first are phrases commemorating the language of Zygmunt Bauman (the sociologist, born in Poznan) and the concept of Liquid Modernity while the second moment takes us on her journey to Venice amidst the floods in November where she recites a spoken poem called "The Two Cities" (text below) which, in her own words, "deals with a profound sense of absence and distance, the acceptance of a painful looming scenario that echoes from a remote past. Sinking, drowning becomes simultaneously a very private and universal condition, a reflection on the global eco-dynamics currently shared by living and non-living beings."

This compositions features texts and field recordings made by Ilaria Boffa in Venice recomposed, reconfigured and supplemented by Jeff Gburek in the studio and around Poznan, featuring slide guitar, piano, field recordings, radio captures, incidental voices (birds even). Thanks to Kołorking Muzyczny for piano and "the space to think" and Karolina Ossowska (backing vocals/voices on "Acqua Alta" and for inspiration in general).

'Acqua Alta!' they yell, 'acqua alta!'

And it floods slowly, it covers
each tongue, it salts all apertures

Rusałka Ice Mix 1, Jan 3, 2020

From the album Flying Rivers (Jeff Gburek & George Christian). The soundscape entitled "Amazonas" was composed after careful listening to the extensive field recording of the Mamori Lake area in Brazil made by Thelmo Cristovam. Within this ambience I wove the other sounds of George Christian walking in San Salvador, the voice of a young indigenous girl singing a song to the river. I wrote a poem in English which George Christian translated into Portuguese. I asked various Portuguese speaking friends to read the poem. Many thanks again to Ana Kavalis (Cuba/ Berlin), Cristina Ferreia (Poznan/ Porto, Portugal) , Denize Mota (Poznan/ Manaus, Brazil). Many thanks to the rivers and oceans and to great spirit. Rusalka Water Wind Fowl Trains

House inside the Raindrop is an English version of the title. The composition employs field recordings of rain, sliced, diced, looped, time-stretched and time-compressed, pitch-shifted. I may have forgotten some of the processes but it was set up and then fairly improvised. This is the third and as it turns out the final take.

Dom w Kropli Deszczu

Salamander's Den is the name I gave to a pool formation in the mountain stream in the Beskidy Mountains near to where this audio was recorded. The track is comprised of 3 different captures mixed together, captured on different days but the stem was recorded on one capture where I manipulated the sound by moving stones (detectable) to free flows of water or dam them up or divert them. Other sounds are ceramic fragments and natural lithophonia. I do no own copyright for the sounds of this or any other body of water.

Salamander's Den op 770

Up in the cabin in Wisła Malinka, I hooked the radios up to an old TV antennae and tuned the dials and live-mixed the signals. Additional sounds one can hear stem from live recording of radio sounds into an android sampling app and played back through the rigs. Signals in this session are 80 percent raw and random but there is some manipulation using live granular filtering patches in Audiomulch.

I've begun a series of sono-meditations on the theme of reification. Some are wordless. Others contain verbality. Always carried forward by something else that remains repressed in the shadows. This is Reification 1015. Work's in progress.  Listening to Milford Graves raps recently about arryhthmia I been using this concept as a criterion for how we might make a pause between music and sound to listen on the border. Another question comes to mind: is there any escape from music? Despite having attempted a jailbreak from regularity in pulse, haven't I just created an irregular regularity? Deflating somewhat the windbag of aesthetics and keeping with the flow of action.
