The iconic label’s founder and one of its longtime acts link up live in NYC for a celebration of dark techno and industrial textures.

Sonic Groove dates back to the rough-and-tumble Brooklyn of the early ‘90s, where brothers Adam X and Frankie Bones founded the first all-techno record store in America. Adam started the label out of the shop, and it’s gone on to become an international force in techno. Particularly over the last few years, Sonic Groove has had its finger on the pulse, releasing records as forward-thinking as they are hard-hitting from names like Henning Baer, Dasha Rush and Northern Structures. Adam X has called Berlin home for many years now, but as he returns to New York this week for a special Sonic Groove party hosted by The Bunker, he’ll stop by our studios here for a sit-down with Bryan Kasenic. Joining him will be Orphx, the longtime Sonic Groove-affiliated duo of Christina Sealey and Richard Oddie, whose latest album Pitch Black Mirror arrived earlier this month.

Løt.te tells us: "Topically, the mix is inspired by the Amazon rainforest and the ‘uncontacted’ peoples who still inhabit it. Technically, I was trying to merge influences from filmmaking with the patterns and techniques of a DJ mix. So you’ll hear a lot of ‘cuts’ in addition to smooth transitions between tracks, as well as manipulations and layering of audio to create a sense of environment, space and time. My goal was to explore new ways of making a DJ mix, and to create an evocative and transportive experience for the listener.

A key Serbian voice in furiously hard techno touches down in the NYC studio to DJ and talk shop.

Milos Martinov, AKA Lag, grew up on punk and studied classical music, but these days the Serbian producer and DJ is dedicated to techno. His sound certainly isn’t for the faint of heart – he likes to play around around 140 BPM, which puts him on the far end of the intensity scale. But across releases for in-the-know labels like Mord and Sect, he’s made sprinting, hard-edged techno that sounds effortless. Lag was recently in New York under the auspices of Exit Festival, his home country’s famed electronic music event — there was a special edition of the Bunker in Brooklyn in honor of its involvement in Exit’s No Sleep Novi Sad Stage this year. Joining us in our NYC studio, Lag gives Bunker boss Bryan Kasenic an overview of his musical life, and DJ sets touching on all sides of his sound.

Bas Mooy - HATE Podcast 143

The Bunker Podcast was started back in 2007 when barely any electronic music podcasts existed if you can imagine such a thing. This was pre-Soundcloud when file hosting was expensive and most people didn't understand how to publish an RSS feed, and portable digital recorder technology wasn't that advanced yet. In the early days, the podcast was made up entirely of sets recorded at The Bunker parties.  At some point artists went from being super excited that we wanted to put their sets online and knew how to do it, to being really squeamish about putting out "imperfect" sets recorded in a live context. So we more or less took some years off from podcasting sets. In recent years, we started releasing sets that weren't necessarily recorded at the party and the podcast picked up steam again. In any case, it's nice that The Bunker Podcast 200 is actually a recording from a party, and even nicer that it's brought to you by our long term resident DJ, Derek @plaslaiko.

artist statement: "This was recorded at a party thrown by the crew at WYA Chicago in early August, 2019. The party itself was incredible! Great sound in a perfect sized room filled with people that were completely going off! Can’t really ask for much more than that. I wanted this to be a Bunker Podcast because I think it’s a great example of how I strive to play every time. This one is a 3 hour long “storytelling” set covering house and techno and everything that falls between. Mostly new tracks with a few classics peppered in to push the buttons on a few of my friends who came out. I hope you enjoy listening to it, as I sure as hell had fun recording it."
