Per Aspera Ad Astra was commissioned by the 2020-2021 Kamiakin High School Instrumental Musical program during the Covid-19 pandemic when all classes were virtual. The Italian translation of the title is, "through hardships to the stars". Students brainstormed ideas with me over zoom and the piece was composed so that it could be recorded and performed virtually. Fortunately, virtual learning came to an end and the piece was able to be performed live! 

The piece has a lot of cinematic influences and is orchestrated for flex band/orchestra meaning that it can work for a full orchestra or just a concert band. The piece also uses a backing track that can be played through any speaker system or programmed to a MainStage setup. Life often feels simple and even predictable. We move through our days to the rhythm of a quiet, familiar melody.
But then, something or someone changes everything. A new connection, a new perspective, a new piece of ourselves awakens, and suddenly the simple song we once knew transforms into something deeper and richer.

Set to Cody Fry’s “I Hear A Symphony,” this production begins with simple and delicate piano tones and a single voice reminiscing, “I used to hear a simple song.” As the music unfolds, layers of emotion, movement, and color build, representing discovery, imperfection, and growth.

Through moments of reflection, passion, and release, the performers explore how love, experience, and vulnerability turn life’s simple melodies into something truly extraordinary.
In the end the quiet returns; not as it was before, but transformed. What began as a simple song now resonates as a symphony.

Beyond attempting to replicate Holkenborg's orchestration, I wanted a look under the hood at how a major film composer completes the atmosphere of a film using music and sound design. While my recreation features a few creative liberties, capturing the adrenaline and thrill of the film, through Holkenborg's interpretation, was the main goal.

Mad Max: Fury Road - "Brothers In Arms" Soundtrack Remake

Coldplay's first major single turned 20 this month! I was working on an arrangement of this song, for a scholastic group, that unfortunately got delayed due to COVID-19. So I took the opportunity to reimagine the song through some alt-indie influences like Bon Iver, S. Carey, and Sufjan Stevens.

This is my first full project in Logic Pro X! I've been working in Adobe Audition the past five years and am excited to branch out into a more robust production software.
