2018 Marching Band Shows

Per Aspera Ad Astra was commissioned by the 2020-2021 Kamiakin High School Instrumental Musical program during the Covid-19 pandemic when all classes were virtual. The Italian translation of the title is, "through hardships to the stars". Students brainstormed ideas with me over zoom and the piece was composed so that it could be recorded and performed virtually. Fortunately, virtual learning came to an end and the piece was able to be performed live! 

The piece has a lot of cinematic influences and is orchestrated for flex band/orchestra meaning that it can work for a full orchestra or just a concert band. The piece also uses a backing track that can be played through any speaker system or programmed to a MainStage setup. This is a competitive marching band show based on a speech delivered on October 26th 1967 by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In this speech speech known as "Your Life's Blueprint", King challenged high school students to live life with purpose and conviction, to rise above hardship and become the best versions of themselves.

"Your Life's Blueprint" Marching Band Show

This is a competitive marching band show inspired by the space race in the 1960's. The show tells the story of America's inspiration to reach the moon, the dreams and planning that went into it, the achievement of reaching the moon and then the future of space travel that America's original journey inspired. Music selections include, Original music by Jeff Chambers, Sy Hovik, Eric Parchen, and Reese Maultsby, Clair de Lune (Debussy), Fly Me To The Moon and Space Oddity by David Bowie.

"Romeo And Juliet" Marching Band Show

This is a competitive marching band show based inspired by "The Most Astounding Fact" by Neil Degrasse Tyson as well as Van Gogh's "Starry Night" painting. The premise of the show is what it's like as a human to look up at a starry night and how it feels to be a part of such a magnificent universe. Music selections are original music by Jeff Chambers, Clair de Lune (Debussy) and Moonlight Sonata (Beethoven).

This is a competitive marching band show based on the concept of humans vs machines. The show is split into three movements:

II. Artificial Connection 
III. Overload

The premise of the show is, a lone human soloist as explores a giant factory and also discovers how machines shape our environment and interactions with one another.

Beyond attempting to replicate Holkenborg's orchestration, I wanted a look under the hood at how a major film composer completes the atmosphere of a film using music and sound design. While my recreation features a few creative liberties, capturing the adrenaline and thrill of the film, through Holkenborg's interpretation, was the main goal.

Mad Max: Fury Road - "Brothers In Arms" Soundtrack Remake

Coldplay's first major single turned 20 this month! I was working on an arrangement of this song, for a scholastic group, that unfortunately got delayed due to COVID-19. So I took the opportunity to reimagine the song through some alt-indie influences like Bon Iver, S. Carey, and Sufjan Stevens.

This is my first full project in Logic Pro X! I've been working in Adobe Audition the past five years and am excited to branch out into a more robust production software.
