2025 Marching Band Shows

Per Aspera Ad Astra was commissioned by the 2020-2021 Kamiakin High School Instrumental Musical program during the Covid-19 pandemic when all classes were virtual. The Italian translation of the title is, "through hardships to the stars". Students brainstormed ideas with me over zoom and the piece was composed so that it could be recorded and performed virtually. Fortunately, virtual learning came to an end and the piece was able to be performed live! 

The piece has a lot of cinematic influences and is orchestrated for flex band/orchestra meaning that it can work for a full orchestra or just a concert band. The piece also uses a backing track that can be played through any speaker system or programmed to a MainStage setup. The story of Narcissus is a timeless cautionary tale about the dangers of self-obsession. In the wild mountains of Greece, a handsome young man named Narcissus grew up admired for his beauty, yet he scorned the love of others, caring only for himself. One day, while wandering, he discovered a crystal-clear pool of water. Leaning over to drink, he was captivated by a beautiful face reflected in the water. Visual themes including Greek architecture, nature-based props such as mountains, and reflective materials representing the pool of water will bring Man In The Mirror to life on the field.

With the stirring and iconic score from the 1991 Prince of Thieves soundtrack by Michael Kamen and Bryan Adams, the music becomes a powerful voice in the storytelling, underscoring moments of hope, unity, and triumph. As the townspeople come together, they find strength in each other and discover their own power to create change. The show blends rich, emotional storytelling with a timeless soundtrack, capturing the spirit of resilience and the transformative power of community.

Prince of Thieves - Marching Band Show

Rearrange is a mind-bending puzzle of a show that explores the world of anagrams, where words hold hidden meanings and shifting perspectives unlock deeper truths. Each movement focuses on a different anagram, starting with "They See," which explores the mysteries of perception and reality. The show then shifts to "Silent," where the power of quietude and unspoken communication is revealed. Finally, "Synesthesia" immerses us in the sensory experience of sound, color, and emotion, challenging the boundaries of how we experience the world.

This show follows a love interest who is drawn to someone charming yet troublemaking. The love interest's dreams are filled with infatuation and their connection deepens, only to end in rejection. As the music of both classical and contemporary influences swirls together, T Squared builds to an unforgettable crescendo, with the two lovers finding their way back to each other — proving that love, no matter the odds, can bring harmony to even the most discordant hearts.

Xponential is a thrilling exploration of power, growth, and understanding. The show begins by demonstrating the concept of power and its rapid, exponential increase—where every step forward builds on the last, creating a curve that grows steeper and more intense. Starting from nothing, we progressively add more, illustrating the power of X and how even the smallest change can lead to monumental results. As the show unfolds, we struggle to understand and harness this growing force. The show culminates with us mastering the power we’ve built, using it with full comprehension, and showing that true mastery comes only through understanding the forces we wield. The letter X is a powerful visual motif for this show and can be worked into every aspect of the design, from prop and silk designs to drill shapes and battery stick visuals.

United We Stand celebrates the boundless potential of youth to shape the future. Today’s youth is facing unprecedented challenges, but if they come together to tackle the world’s most pressing issues, amazing things will happen. By leaning into their creativity, passion, and a drive to make a difference, they will be able to work toward a brighter future. The show opens with Katy Perry's song Firework celebrating each performer's individuality and self expression. An introspective arrangement of America the Beautiful followed by an electronic dance break with American Teen encourages us to set aside our differences and come together with a common goal, and the closing movement, Fight Song by Rachel Platten, empowers performers to direct that energy into creating positive change. When we unite with purpose, amazing things can happen — and the future is ours to create.

Beyond attempting to replicate Holkenborg's orchestration, I wanted a look under the hood at how a major film composer completes the atmosphere of a film using music and sound design. While my recreation features a few creative liberties, capturing the adrenaline and thrill of the film, through Holkenborg's interpretation, was the main goal.

Mad Max: Fury Road - "Brothers In Arms" Soundtrack Remake

Coldplay's first major single turned 20 this month! I was working on an arrangement of this song, for a scholastic group, that unfortunately got delayed due to COVID-19. So I took the opportunity to reimagine the song through some alt-indie influences like Bon Iver, S. Carey, and Sufjan Stevens.

This is my first full project in Logic Pro X! I've been working in Adobe Audition the past five years and am excited to branch out into a more robust production software.
