Against The Grain was created using The Civilians signature investigative approach. From transcripts of interviews The Civilians conducted with Micki Grant, Hope Clarke, Marie Thomas, Jelani Alladin, and Darilyn Castillo, five composers and our writing/directing team created this twenty-minute musical about the origin story and legacy of Don’t Bother Me, I Can’t Cope.

The Lobby Project features new work by New York City Center Artists in Residence The Civilians examining the dynamic history of this year’s Off-Center programming. Utilizing The Civilians’ unique brand of artistic and journalistic exploration, a group of up-and-coming composers will create three 25-minute docu-musicals based on and inspired by interviews with each Off-Center musical's original creative teams, as well as other artists and community members who have been affected by the legacy of these shows.

Janelle is an interdisciplinary artist who specializes in highlighting the complexity and layers of our lives. They use every tool: music, soundscaping, dialogue, poetry, conversation, body, movement, etc., to present and occasionally replicate the parts of us that are unique, special, and still shared. They have had their musicals, plays, and performance art presented in various theater's; The Kennedy Center, Legoland New York, Joe’s Pub, Seattle Public Theater, and National Black Theatre  - but they no longer want that to define their artistic depth and experience. They have been crafting stories, examining (people), and attempting to dis/uncover how we grow together their whole life; storytelling is what they do.
