This track was selected from an international call asking people to record their 'local', in response to the question 'What can a sound recording tell us about architecture?'

Realised through 2023, Swamps & Stars events brought together artists and researchers from Berlin and beyond to explore the vibrations between swampy spaces and the cosmos. Through sound, performance, and participatory happenings we listened and learned together modes of Planetary Listening.

Peters Strickmanns‘ „Weights“ was originally presented as a performance as part of the 2023 Listening Biennial (@ Errant Sound, Berlin) in which acoustic feedback and unavoidable performative gesture were manipulated and troubled by the weight, the materiality and some invisible parts of selected stones.

Weights

What can a field recording tell us about architecture? 


In 2013 the artist group, OSSO developed Echoes, a program for the city of Lisbon to explore the relationship between LISTENING and PLACE. They organised a broadcast event for the Lisbon Architecture Treinnale on stress.fm. 


I was invited to curate the broadcast program and put out an international call asking people to record their 'local'. The question I asked was: 'What can sound recording tell us about architecture?'


I have sat on this collection of recordings for about ten years and recently stumbled across the folder of audio on my hard drive... recorded before the pandemic, before the current economic and political instabilty. It struck me that listening to this archive is like a window onto another time. Many of the contributors have written saying the places they recorded are longer there or that they have changed in certain ways. What started as an enquirey into the sounds of place, has now become a collection of memories- or at least something different and changed by time.
