The rainforests of Malaysia are some of the richest on the planet. While several national parks have been established in the country, large areas of primary forest still exist outside park borders, and it's these unprotected forests that are facing rapid & systemic destruction.

In March 2014 I spent a week in and around Taman Negara National Park recording the extraordinary sights and sounds of this stunning area. Sadly, only a few kilometres from park headquarters in Kuala Tahan, extensive areas of virgin forest are being logged and cleared for palm oil plantations. It's a story being played out throughout the world, as governments & corporations see forests as having more value dead than alive.

Recorded from a logging access road adjacent to pristine, primary rainforest, this is a sampler featuring some of the unique & beautiful natural sounds of this precious habitat.

Tasmania's rainforests and old growth eucalypt forests have been subjects to decades of conflict between pro-logging groups and environmentalists. Thankfully, significant areas of these unique forests have been gazetted as World Heritage  sites and hopefully other areas such as the Tarkine wilderness will benefit from similar protection in the future.

This recording was made on the slopes of Mount Field National Park, and captures the sounds of some Tasmania's unique bird species.

On my last night in Townsville the rain shattered down after months of intense tropical heat.. the town verging on drought.. the frogs exploded from the earth

Suburban Chorus After A Tropical Storm, Wulguru/Townsville.

Dusk in the tall coastal forests near Myrtle Beach in Murramarang National Park, NSW, Australia. On this evening the Kookaburra's and Mole Crickets created a wonderful droning symphony.
Murramarang is located in the South Coast region of NSW, a region known for it's stunning beauty, rich forests and beautiful quiet. I sometimes went hours without hearing planes/cars, etc. a real rarity in this day and age. 
It's a place where you can feel remote and at peace. I miss it a lot.

The Casuarinas Crackled And Whispered On A Windswept Headland

A lush morning chorus at the edge of the forest/marsh near Durras Lake in Murramarang National Park. Located on the south coast of NSW, Australia.
Bibrons Toadlet's chant loudly yet sparsely at the marshes edge while a mixture of forest/marsh birds sing in the cool humid air. The droning ebb and flow of the waves crashing into the sands of Durras Beach are a constant sonic presence here. A distinctly Australian song.

Morning Songs By Durras Lake

Dozens of Bibron's Toadlets sing on a beautiful cool night in the marsh beside Durras Lake. In the surrounds there were hundreds of these toadlets.. accompanied by many insects, the occasional microbat and the lovely waves on Durras beach.

A Chorus Of Toadlets Squeak Underneath The Starry Sky

A vibrant spring dawn chorus recorded on the banks of the Cudgegong River in Wollemi National Park, NSW, Australia. 

Species recorded on this track include Musk Duck, Australian Reed Warbler, White-throated Gerygone, Superb Fairywren, Grey Fantail, Rufous Whistler, Noisy Friarbird, White-eared Honeyeater, Yellow-faced Honeyeater, Grey Shrikethrush, Olive-backed Oriole & Australian Raven.
