Thousands Of Maggots Inside A Dead Kudu (excerpt)

While driving up from Calliope to Kroombit Tops National Park (Central Queensland, Australia) we got stuck in the lowlands due to temporarily impassable creeks. In the previous days there had been heavy rain and on this night the heat and humidity was intense. When these elements came together it allowed the subtropical anuran diversity of this place to really shine and the frogs of the area puffed up their throats and consumed the sonic space of the lowlands. The habitat of the lowlands is a mixture of subtropical woodland and farmland for grazing cattle.
In this particular chorus a stunningly large group of Desert Tree Frogs (Litoria rubella) screamed from a pond below while several species of Rocket Frogs (Litoria sp.) excitedly chattered in a roadside ditch. Also accompanying the chorus's included a Green Tree Frog (Litoria caerulea) chanting close to the mics as well as Roth's Tree Frogs (Litoria rothi), Eastern Dwarf Tree Frogs (Litoria fallax) and Salmon-striped Frogs (Limnodynastes salmini) singing in the surrounds. 
Unfortunately I wasn't able to record much of the many incredible lowland chorus's as I was on a scientific expedition so didn't have much time or freedom to record on this night, a night on which I heard more frog species over a few hours than I likely have over my entire life!

Otoroku is proud to present the full recording of the first meeting between Bill Orcutt (USA) and Okkyung Lee (South Korea).  Individually these players have focussed on an idiosyncratic approach to their chosen instruments and technique. Okkyung is one of the most singular voices to compromise the cello’s ‘classical’ origin, whilst Orcutt has spent many years developing a unique abstraction of traditional guitar blues.
 
Live at Cafe Oto is an uncompromising combination of these individual elements and an ecstatic improvised assault of mind and sense.

Cultivating Love In The Fear Body (Live In Tel Aviv)

A glorious state of the union for multi-instrumentalist Matthew De Gennaro, recent newlywed & transplant to beautiful Saint Paul, MN. Side A ("nature") is an ode for his lovely bride, a story song that swings and glides like S.E. Rogie, sung by a changed and grateful man. On the flip ("civilization") is a cascading organ / keyboard / fiddle -driven piece that manages to be both downcast and hopeful. All this comes tied together with brilliant art by friend Josh Burkett, assembled in homage the 78s that fill MDG's music room.

By the pond I heard the most intense chorus I've ever experienced, standing within a few metres of the pond my ears would distort due to the raucous frogs! 
While this chorus may be harsh to listen to, I feel that this intensity when listened over a certain period of time may lead to a mesmerizing state of meditation, this idea is influenced in particular by Tony Conrad's piece 'Four Violins' in which the frequencies and almost violently loud amplified violins create a heightened state of listening. 

The pond chorus is dominated by hundreds of Dusky Toadlets (Uperoleia fusca), with the pulsating, rhythmic plonking of Northern Banjo Frogs (Limnodynastes terraereginae) in the foreground along with Eastern Dwarf Tree Frogs (Litoria fallax) and Rocket Frogs (Litoria latopalmata and/or inermis). Also in the chorus are the infamous, exotic Cane Toads (Rhinella marina) which add their ominous, hauntingly beautiful drones to the dense array of bouncing frequencies. Although they may be nice to listen to, in many places in Australia these toads have totally taken over, being the only voice in once diverse chorus's, I pray that this never happens to this lovely pond! 

By the creek, ironically called Dry Creek which it was far from being, there was a gentler but very lively chorus. Dominated by the very common Striped Marsh Frogs (Limnodynastes peronii) whose wonderful plopping songs are always a treat to listen to, as well as many Great Barred Frogs (Mixophyes fasciolatus) and the occasional Graceful Tree Frog (Litoria gracilenta). In the background the deafening pond chorus can be heard as well. 

In the end who or what is calling doesn't really matter, the little scientific, nerdy part of me likes to add this information, but what really matters (to me at least) is the beauty of the resonances and frequencies of these living songs, (which would possibly be even greater to listen to through abstracted ears..) and I hope that they bring you some joy too :)

On my last night in Townsville the rain shattered down after months of intense tropical heat.. the town verging on drought.. the frogs exploded from the earth
