Pleased to share the 12th episode of the Digital Sound Residency hosting British multi-instrumentalist Lucy Railton with ‘Medieval Sui’, an ambiguous, intimate piece conceived during a period of stay in Venice while sheltering from torrential rain, dramatic tidal shifts and surreal opulent encounters. 

Lucy Railton is a cellist, composer, and curator whose practices originate from a deep dedication to the physicality of sound. Her works span electroacoustic practices to field recordings, exploring the realms of resonance, psychoacoustics, synthesis and microtonality. 
Since 2018, she has released albums on imprints like Modern Love, Editions Mego, Portraits GRM, PAN, ECM, SN Variations, Shelter Press and Takuroku.

In November 2023, Lucy released 'Corner Dancer' via Modern Love, immaculately articulating the breadth of her artistic range, drawn from a nearly 20 year career as a soloist, writer and collaborator. 
Following her 2018 solo debut ‘Paradise 94’, and countless collaborations - recently in duo with legendary EMS co-founder Peter Zinovieff and in trio with Kali Malone and Stephen O’Malley, plus appearances on recordings by Beatrice Dillon, Ellen Arkbro, Laurel Halo and Petter Eldh - Railton’s diverse musical circles bleed into each other, revealing vulnerable and compelling emotional facets through a fluid mix of composition, and pure expression.

Poem for Pauline (2012, revised 2017) by Madelyn Byrne

Poem for Pauline is a remix of Poem of Change by Pauline Oliveros and was originally created in honor of the composer’s 80th birthday.  Poem for Pauline invites audience members and performing musicians to improvise or to simply listen and meditate on the sounds.    The original piece (Poem of Change) was done in 1992 and uses audio archives from World War II, combined with the composer’s voice (singing and speaking), and her accordion playing.  Pauline poses a series of challenging questions, “ Can we give up war?” among them.  Twenty-five years later, Pauline’s queries remain all too relevant.   

I choose the sound of rain to be a sonic backdrop in this piece for a number of reasons. This particular rain sample was used in my composition Arrival, an audio-visual piece with artwork by Lily Glass.  Arrival was part of the DVD SoundingOut! --  a project that Pauline supported, helped to organize, and for which she wrote the liner notes.  Secondly, the rain provides a background level of listening while the other sounds provide the foreground. This is my homage to Pauline’s concept of focal and global listening.  Lastly, like a gentle rain, Pauline’s work has been consistently and peacefully making life-affirming changes throughout the world.

Bridges of Königsberg- Deceit

The wondrous number algorithm - outlined by Douglas Hofstadter in Gödel, Escher, Bach - has a simple set of rules: A number is chosen at random and "if it is odd, we triple it and add 1. If it is even, we take half of it." The process produces a series of numbers that increase and decrease until the number 1 is reached, thus ending the procedure.
Setting this into RTcmix, I produced strings of numbers to determine various musical parameters in this fixed-media work: Lengths (in seconds) of sections, formal layout, frequencies, amplitudes, and other intrinsic elements of signal processing were all derived from the wondrous number set to create a sound world that is both glitchy, biting, and intensely delicate.
