2017 Waves

Sirenity explores the mythology of the siren - hybrid woman with either bird-like or mer-like physical qualities, whose beautiful voices lured the all-too-easily corruptible minds of sailors to their peril.

Channelling spectralist, minimalist and ecoacoustic approaches, the work retains this dyadic relationship of characters: the sirens through humpback whale song and the sailor/victim in the airborne caws and calls of the wandering albatross (both sourced from recordings), with the former drawing the latter to its impending doom; the aftermath decaying back to the torrents of the sea.

Performed by the Australian String Quartet - Kristian Winther, Ioana Tache, Stephen King, Sharon Draper - as part of the National Composers' Forum 2013 in Elder Hall on 17 October 2013. Recorded by Kym Wilson, with technical assistance from Iran Sanadzadeh.

this is an SOS from the second of thirteen.  We have entered an unknown stage of emotional development with our subject brakence.  There is now a green light beaming from his forehead.  We may have made a mistake getting him that iced americano.  He hasn't been listening to our orders and is grinning with devious determination.  We believe he may be scheming to shoot the sun.  We aren't pleased to say the least.  Shooting the sun is the highest risk, highest reward move in the game of hearts.  If he doesn't pull back his bow far enough, the arrow will fail to reach its target and begin falling back down to earth.  It will then reach him at terminal velocity and he will be impaled right between the eyes, which is exactly from where our precious truth energy emanates.  However, he is so blindly confident in his ability to accomplish this that it might just work.  But in that case, we'd have a whole new problem on our hands. Mia Salsjö’s new orchestral work for 10 soloists, 8 strings and 2 percussionists has been composed in creative response to Fed Square’s distinctive, heritage-listed architecture. This recording was produced by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, NGV and Fed Square. Recorded at Hamer Hall in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia commissioned by the NGV, Federation Square in collaboration with the MSO

Drawing from detailed architectural plans, architects’ annotations and build material selections, Salsjö has translated and interpreted these hand-drawn and machine-made lines, transforming them into a code.

The musical composition has emerged in the spaces between Fed Square’s architectural plans, the site and the Salsjö’s artistic method of interpretation.

Responsibility

A response to the lives lost in Paris, November 2015. The piece attempts to portray the confused but overwhelmingly energised inner workings of a young, fanaticised mind and give form to their misshapen and distorted reality.

Works by playwright Wole Soyinka influenced my choice of perspective when approaching this topic.

The Fanatic or I Am Right You Are Dead

Commissioned by Samantha Wolf for International Women's Day 2016 concert: This Will Be Our Reply. First performed on 7th March 2016 by Tamara Kohler, Gemma Tomlinson, Aaron Klein, & Adam McMillan.

There is usually more complexity on the inside than what is initially seen.

"On the Inside" explores the many aspects of identity throughout a woman’s life, from growth to complexity, (as opposed to innocence to uselessness). It rejects the idea that women are to be seen as objects only, that a woman’s value lies in her physical attributes and functionality to another. 

Musically, this piece started with a single small motif that is heard about a third of the way in, which I then grew and developed continuously. Despite rejecting external ideals, aspects that might be perceived as "beauty" have been retained because, like all characteristics, beauty is not something to be ashamed of or feared.

The frame and strings
of a fully strung grand piano
must withstand the pressure
of about 20 tonnes

The Kemble piano factory in Milton Keynes was the last to exist in the UK until its recent relocation to Indonesia and Japan. Using binaural recordings made during a visit to the factory before its closure, The Piano Makers is a study of piano material and manufacture, and the idea of the tension and pressure that the instrument withstands.

The Piano Makers

Making Waves is a monthly series of curated playlists streaming one hour of quality, new composed music.  Founded in 2015, Making Waves shines a spotlight on the music of Australian composers. Fresh playlists are released on the first day of each month and older playlists are made available all year round via our archives; perfect for those with just a few minutes to explore one track or for hours perusing a myriad of diverse sound-worlds.


The project offers wider exposure to emerging composers, their music and the talented performers who champion it. We also provide an easy-to-access platform for listeners to sit back and enjoy a curated hour of exciting new music or explore our living composers more actively.  The playlist themes (and media through which they’re shared eg. Soundcloud, YouTube) evolve each month depending on the content received directly from our talented composers.

At its core Making Waves is a curated listening space. In 2016 we branched into producing our own content through a special project, Making Conversation, thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign. Making Conversation: Australian Composers Project is a series of podcasts and vodcasts presenting the human side of living Australian composers, released on popular audiovisual and social platforms mid-2017.
Composers Lisa Cheney (Melbourne) and Peggy Polias (Sydney) are curating this project.
