Application mix from Jesse Blake for the Strawberry Fields DJ Competition, celebrating their amazing achievement of 15 years on the Murray. So much inspiration for my mixing and sound has stemmed from attending the Strawberry Fields over the years, from the beautiful landscape to the amazing performances that come with it. Thanks strawbs and PBS 106.7FM for the opportunity.

For this mix, I've tried to envision how I would open things up, trying to incorporate the euphoric complexities of progressive house for a smooth start, and delving into some fun PowerHouse towards the tail end of the set. Paying homage to tunes from recent artists Alex Kassian, Maruwa, and Jex Opolis as well as past producers Tocayo and Rozalla.

As we enter festival season in Melbourne and having just attended A3 Festival last week, I’ve been inspired to create an energetic house mix with the open air and afternoon breeze of the A3 stage dance floor still fresh in my mind. 

As usual I’ve blended sounds from the past and present keeping things trippy, sexy and fun. Expect chunky prog, 90s house gems and some bouncier hard house. 

My favourite thing about DJing is using mood and environment to challenge and shape my signature sound in any context. I draw inspiration from artists who I think have nailed their versatility, such as Paramida, Hannah D, Roza Terenzi, and THC. 

Music has always been a big part of my life. Some of my happiest, most memorable moments have been experienced on dance floors across the world so my goal as a DJ is to hopefully create experiences like that for others!

We met Ryan, aka Razzy P, last year as his journey into record collecting and DJing began.

Ryan reached out to us and picked up some of our old records. We've stayed in touch, and it's been amazing to watch his progress in such a short time.

His passion for vinyl collecting and mixing was sparked by a trip to Dekmental Festival in 2023, where he saw Ogazon draw a crowd at the Hor Berlin stage. Inspired by the experience, Ryan took the plunge and invested in some Reloop’s and a Xone 23 mixer. He draws influence from artists like Clint, Aldonna, Cosmic G, Young Marco, and Maara, with a sound that spans deep, melodic, and progressive styles.

Yet to play a gig we are very excited to see his name pop up on flyers around Naarm!

Q: Hi Sem, thank you for curating this episode of ODP invites. Could you tell us something about your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound?

X-Coast has been a big influence the past few years. His sample-heavy, upbeat house with a ton of groove perfectly aligns with my taste in club music. He actually inspired me to start producing music myself.

Seeing Identified Patient perform at De School for the first time left me shook. It completely shifted my perspective on playing cross-genre and maintaining energy throughout a set without relying on ‘bangers.’

Stef de Haan has also been a major influence. The way he plays with the energy of a track in unexpected ways is so cool to me. I love how he mixes house tracks at 10/15 BPM higher in his hardgroove sets. It taught me that lowering the energy of certain tracks can be just as impactful and cool as raising it.

Q: Can you share some of the challenges you faced when you first started out and how you overcame them?

When I started, my focus was solely on finding individual tracks that resonated with the crowd. While this made for fun sets, it lacked the cohesiveness needed to create a shared experience for everyone. I realized the power of a containing energy after watching DJs spend a full hour on a build-up in a three-hour set. If you do it right, it makes a set unforgettable.

Q:Do you prefer to play a sundown set or a sunrise set?

Sunrise, without a doubt! There’s something magical about a sunrise set, this is when the party suddenly gets a new and warm vibe after partying through the night. I’d play something like “I Need Your Lovin’” by Infectious as the sun starts to rise.
