This is the first window into my upcoming album.  Entitled "Get Up, Get Ready for Work", the music is a reflection of the city in which the music was created and my state of mind when I lived there.  It is both a love song and a giant middle finger to the ceaseless, frenetic, and endlessly cyclical grind of New York life.

I wrote this immediately after finding out David Bowie had died. As 2016 has gone on and many more of my idols and icons of art have passed, it has become more and more meaningful to me.

Midori Takada sounds like heaven. Over the past forty years, the masterful Japanese percussionist and composer’s musical output has ventured far and wide; deep diving through Asian and African percussive language, with a specialist subject of Japanese meditative and ceremonial sonic practices.

Ahead of her performance at the Barbican's Transcender 2017 series tonight, we asked her nicely if she would curate a mix of her favourite transcendental music from around the world and boy did she deliver.

Old Eyes is a personal reality check, a look in the mirror.  It's a song about change - embracing it, learning from it, trusting that it won't destroy you.  That can be hard to do as time goes on and we become more set in our ways.  It is my hope that this song, through its unorthodox combination of styles, sounds, and rhythms will show that music can be more than its genre.  It can be a vehicle for change.

I usually don’t write about feelings or experiences, my music is not a vehicle for ideas and language; music is an art form that stands on its own. I put sounds there for the sake of sound, not what they mean. I’m perfectly fine with listeners feeling their own emotions or adding their narratives to my music, but that has never been my goal. Music and sound for me is a physical experience that you feel and enjoy. FIGURE BESIDE ME is the exception to the rule. After this EP I’ll go back to serving the dancefloor again - I just need to get this one out of me.
