A re-upload from the dearly departed Krossfingers blog and mix series. This was originally mixed in 2016 in my old apartment in Bedstuy on my two worn-out Tech 12s. All wax, mostly found at A1 Records in NYC which was my office of sorts for about five years. I didn't have a day job so was there 2-3 times a week looking for dollar bin records (a few of which have since been reissued lol). I'd spend a few hours there and spend maybe $50, get a bunch of great stuff (and plenty of duds too) and then bike home. It was a nice chapter in my life!

Over the past two and a half decades Jex Opolis has found himself in quite a few scenes. Now based in NYC, Jered Stuffco played in bands in Edmonton in the 90s, was a founding member of the Toronto electronic group DVAS in the early 2000s and now finds himself firmly established as one of the top selectors and producers in Brooklyn’s ever expanding landscape of artists.

Along the way he has released countless solo EPs and remixes as well as limited pressings of side projects such as Conga Radio on his label Good Timin’ Records.2018 has seen him move away from his classic balearic style and closer to the club with a new live show and the appropriately named sister label Bad Timin’. While the goal this year was to “flood the club,” it doesn’t mean he still didn’t have his fair share of tasty flea market finds to drop into his mix for us this month. We had a chance to talk about his favorite gear, guilty pleasure tracks and Michael Douglas in our latest Mixed By feature. Check out the interview and mix below.

Just last month, Canadian Jex Opolis debuted on our label with a cosmic and feel good electro EP that came washed in Italo influences. It was the latest in a long line of colourful releases—largely on his own Good Timin’ label—that have explored a timeless mix of synth pop, leftfield, house and nu disco since 2013. As someone with a background playing in bands, he knows how to properly arrange a track, which always shows, and he even uses his own voice for extra layers of personalisation. 

His mix for us is a fun one: vocals ricochet around over boogie basslines, tropical percussions flails away next to glistening Casio keys and day-glo disco is never far away. House grooves take over later on and power through with more lush chords and it all makes for exactly the sort of thing you want to hear on an open-air, sun-kissed festival stage.
