THE CLIMB

When my dad died last winter, I was ready to stop doing music all together. Writer’s block, ‘living’ blocks, you name it. Getting out of bed was a Herculean feat. People gently advised “pick up your guitar” or “let it out in song.” And though intentions were sooo lovely, I just wanted to be left alone with my grief.

One evening, I did indeed pick up my guitar. I revisited the melody and chords of a song I was working on months earlier that only had placeholder lyrics. I started a conversation with myself, with my dad too, about what the loss was doing to me. How it was taking me down and interfering with everything in my life, and how I wanted to live again. New lyrics poured out of me along with the tears. It was in that moment, I realized that I had to find a way to KEEP GOING. ’Away From Me’ came to be.

We all suffer from grief when we lose something important to us and it comes in many forms —the loss of loved ones, time, jobs, relationships, or even ideas we have formed in our heads. But no matter what, in the end, we all find a way to go on living.

AWAY FROM ME

On Being Good takes you on a journey, or really, a bad date. (We’ve all had them!) One where you can’t get a word in edgewise because the other person can’t stop talking about themselves. I found myself playing along at first. Nodding, smiling, listening, or trying to at least. But I was bored, walking on eggshells, and then, elated to realize I DON'T WANT THIS. Playing along is easy. Not being “behaved,” being your true, messy self is brave and will attract the right people. People who want you to be YOU and gravitate to it, whatever it comes with.
