While the anointing of Jesus occurs in Matthew, Mark, and John, only John tells us that this was done by Mary. And while Luke doesn't mention this event, he does have one episode when Martha and Mary give a meal for Jesus. John contains the most information about them, starting with the raising of their brother from the dead. 
But what can we learn from them? 
Who were they? 
What is their background? 
What examples - good or bad - do they give that can teach us more of what it means to follow Jesus?
