Sherri and I stand in front of thousands of men and women in prison every year. Every time I look into their eyes, I see a little boy or girl. I see someone’s mom or dad. Even though they committed horrible crimes, they are still someone's son, daughter, mother, father, brother, or sister, and God loves them. In spite of their crimes, they are still human beings, and they still have value. 

There are 2.4 million people who are incarcerated in America. That is 2.4 million fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons, and daughters. Making the prison population the fourth largest “city” in America, it’s like the entire population of Houston, Texas, is locked up. Yes, many are very bad people and need to be locked up. But here is something you may not know: Up to 97% of them will at some point be released back into our communities.

Those statistics are shocking and sad. What happened that we are the most incarcerated country in the world? Recidivism rates are as high as 68%. This means 68% of the 97% that will be released will re-offend and return to prison. We need a new plan. What we need is something that starts at the source. Something that starts in the heart of the criminal. We know who transformed our lives, and we know that He is willing to transform us all if we choose to believe and if we are willing.

In life, we can often feel a weight that feels like chains holding us back from the life God wants us to live. Sometimes, these chains are literal chains, sometimes, they are burdens put upon us by others, and oftentimes, these are chains that we forge ourselves out of failure, shame, insecurity, and a variety of other things. This is a simple song that reminds us that our identity is found in Christ, and through Him, we can throw off these chains.

Matthew 25:36 – needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.
