78rpm Disc 184: George Tapley: The Chorus Jig (reel)

The week's disc features accordionist George Tapley - along with accompaniment from Dan Sullivan - on The Chorus Jig. Which is actually a reel. The Traditional Tune Archive notes that 'Linscott (1948) explains: "The 'Chorus Jig' has always been a favorite with pipers. It is an Irish melody whose author and date are unknown. Jigs were originally tunes sung after a play by the clowns. During the 17th century everyone sang them, and the dances were performed by persons of all ranks. They are generally thought of as Irish, but jigs were common in England and Scotland. The word 'jig' applied to a form of rhyme and is of uncertain derivation."' We have recently been donated a booklet of Sliabh Luachra tunes that John Murphy  ( 1911- 2006 ) of Currow and later Mourneabbey near Mallow used to play. We plan on having that collection on our Website for Xmas 2022 .
We also have been donated a great  Audio collection of John playing which we will upload also at the same time . Our thanks to Carmel Gleeson ,Esther Douglas and Dan Healy for their work and Donations.

This was originally published on CD under the title "Down by the Glenside". Thanks to Eamon for his permission to post it here.

Eamon was born in Mountcollins, Co. Limerick, and quickly learned the accordion and fiddle while playing for dances in the area.

After a brief stint in London, Eamon immigrated to Massachusetts, US in 1959, where he played in the New State Ballroom Ceili Band with Paddy Cronin, Mike McHale, Sean McGlynn, and others. He then joined the Connacht Ceili Band with Tommy Sheridan, Martin McDonagh, Brendan Tonra, Jimmy Kelly, Paddy Cronin, Larry Reynolds, and others. 

Eamon's time in the states appears to have had a big impact including the Jacqueline Waltz as he heard it live played by Will Starr in Boston with Tommy Sheridan, or the two reels he composed with a bluegrass feel, the Fiddler and the Green Grass.

Eamon later moved to Vermont where he was a major influence on Hilari Farrington Koehler and Benedict Koehler among others. He now lives back at home in Mountcollins, where he is "the last of the Flynns".

78rpm Disc: Jerry O'Brien: Gypsy Hornpipe

Accordion player Jerry O'Brien recorded this version of the Gypsy hornpipe for the O'Byrne De Witt label (9-101), which was later re-released on the Copley label. O'Brien, originally from Kinsale, arrived in Boston in the early 1920s and recorded with O'Leary's Irish Minstrels. John Connors provides piano accompaniment on this recording.
