Textures [Sound Library 4]

Toki Fuko captivates listeners with deep soundscapes and melancholic melodies. Insomnia is part of the four-track EP Phantom Scripts, set for release on 10th April on The Hague located spclnch, available in both digital and vinyl formats on Bandcamp.

A hypnotic blend of soundscapes and field recordings, Insomnia navigates us through an eerie atmosphere. An initial sense of unease, but an underlying current of reassurance lingers throughout. The track transports you to a dimly lit room where fingers glide effortlessly across piano keys, merging electronic textures with classical composition. Midway, a voice sample emerges, adding depth to the narrative and drawing you further into a world explored through sound.

Insomnia evokes the feeling of creating messages from the void and the unknown.

PREMIERE: Toki Fuko – Insomnia [spclnch]

Nocturna is the first collaborative album between New Zealand musician Andrew Thomas and German artist Joachim Spieth. Inspired by fleeting moments of beauty in nature, where light illuminates and then disappears into the shadows, Thomas began composing on the piano during Summer in the Southern Hemisphere. Gathering piano fragments like treasured relics, he passed them on to Spieth some months later, as Summer was now dawning in the Northern Hemisphere.

Spieth wove the piano’s delicate tones into something new, preserving its organic essence while illuminating certain sounds and removing others. The textures within Nocturna are shaped by light, time, and the discernment of each artist - as what to keep became as important as what to leave out. The shadow of what used to be allows a strange and delicate mood to arise. Though the piano remains at the heart of the album, Spieth’s intricate sonic layers form a spectral web around the immersive soundscape, while the piano’s fragile notes climb tentatively like tendrils of a plant.

Nocturna sits on the threshold of ambient and modern classical, with elements of sound design that make it an especially pleasing piece with deeper listening. As Nocturna unfolds, it transports the listener into a space of contemplation and mystery—expansion and enclosure, and perhaps reflecting the increase in nocturnal activity of nature on a Summers evening. Light and shadow, the duality of hemispheres, and the promise of Summer’s arrival converge, and then fade once more into the night.

Joachim Spieth’s musical career spans more than two decades, during which he has played many roles: DJ, producer, live performer, and founder of the esteemed Affin record label. His work is defined by an exceptional attention to detail and a keen sensitivity to creating immersive atmospheres, qualities that are evident whether in his studio productions or live performances.

In the early stages of his career, Spieth made notable strides through collaborations with Wolfgang Voigt’s Kompakt label. His contributions to the renowned Pop Ambient series, as well as a track featured on The Orb’s Back To Mine compilation, helped solidify his reputation within the ambient music scene.

A defining moment in Spieth’s career came in 2007 with the founding of his own label, Affin. Under his leadership, Affin has evolved into a respected international platform that brings together like-minded artists and fosters creative collaboration. Working closely with ambient artist Markus Guentner, Spieth has established a dynamic partnership that extends beyond music, with Guentner also contributing his artistic vision to the label’s visual identity.

Spieth’s discography showcases remarkable versatility, earning him recognition from both critics and fans. In addition to albums like Irradiance, Terrain, Overlay, and Retrace, his work has been reinterpreted by esteemed artists such as alva noto, Pole, Abul Mogard, Rafael Anton Irisarri, Dino Sabatini, Luigi Tozzi, and Claudio PRC. Through his Textures series, Spieth has also created a sound library that further emphasizes his commitment to sonic exploration and experimentation.

As a DJ, Joachim Spieth has performed in over 30 countries, sharing his musical vision with audiences worldwide. In recent years, he has developed a live ambient program, which has been showcased at prestigious festivals such as Up To Date (Białystok), Mostra (Barcelona), and the Ambientalny Festival (Wrocław).
