I wrote (made?) this piece over a year ago and so it was such a joy for it to finally have an outing!! 

programme note:
I chose to make this orchestral score by hand: I used paints, brushes, scissors, and glue -- the handmade aesthetic is immediate, creative, and vulnerable. 

I started making 'a different kind' because of a specific idea for an orchestral shape -- the piece then mutates through other slowly shifting, graphically notated ideas, experimenting with timbre and texture and throwing conventionally notated melodic cells into stark relief. these melodic cells are sweet and melancholic and come from some of my favourite songs, and I like the jarring joining of these simple melodies with clouds of instrumental sound.

during its creation, this piece became a visceral, doing-based meditation on how one can approach making feminist orchestral music -- how to think about challenging (fundamentally patriarchal) value judgements which have defined the Western canon, which in many ways are at their most reified (and deified) in orchestral music.

CLICKBAIT is about the internet. It’s about information overload (i.e. too many things happening too quickly) and the effects of digital media on the ways we think. It’s about attention span, the feeling of constantly shifting your gaze from one object to another in an environment of rapid disorientation, and the delicate, fleeting moments of calm introspection that exist in the liminal spaces. It’s about whether four musicians are able, despite continually being distracted, to focus on one thing.

"Heroes" from the cycle "Für uns. Für uns" by Hannes Seidl, in an interpretation by Anne van de Star and David Helbich

Hannes wrote scores for people playing together at home. Perfect for Corona times. 

The songs are based on pop songs, this one on a song by David Bowie. 

The score only mentions piano and voice. The heavy pedal usage inspired us to make a very reverby version with an e-git and an Oud replacing the grand piano (I got a bed instead...). 
The added  electronics are (most unfortunately) hiding our amazing singing talents.
