Blanche Calloway was an absolute trailblazer: the first woman and the first African-American woman to ever lead a big jazz band and an all-male big jazz band. With her Joy Boys, she toured all around the U.S.A, singing and performing her own songs, which younger brother Cab Calloway would describe as a major influence to him and his trademark style. As it happened with many other revolutionary women, her legacy has been buried under male-dominant historic narratives. Which is why it was such a unique privilege for me to be able to now pay homage to her and make sure that she's cherished forever by us all.
The other amazing privilege about making this record was the opportunity to work with and get to know the wonderful person and outstanding talent that Soraia Tavares, whose phenomenal voice you're hearing here, is.

It's for these two reasons that I'd urge you to share this recording with everyone: so we bring awareness to the great talents of both past and future, making sure they're never forgotten.
