This is the most personal tune I have made yet.

The poem sampled is Wild Geese, read by it's author Mary Oliver. I first came across it when I moved to a community in Devon called Embercombe to recover from a severe bout of depression. There I learned the healing power of nature connection, that your troubles fade and your spirit rejoices when you realise you are a part of something much bigger than yourself. That there is a deep freedom in letting go of the concerns of the 'civilised' world and allowing the animal inside to experience nature as your ancestors did before you. To be in it and a part of it, not it's master.

After I left I tried to carry these lessons with me, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. After all I write this from my smartphone, in a room with a 50 inch television and a Playstation. But I carry it with me still, it is my favourite poem, and I hope I have done a good job of wrapping it in music that suits it's deep beauty.

It is doubly personal as while I was finishing it I heard the terrible news that Fi, one of the elders of the community, had lost her battle with cancer. Words cannot describe how much the wisdom she emparted to us all meant, the warmth that she radiated and the love that was felt for her by all who passed through Embercombe's gates. Her memory will live long, kept aflame by the many, many people whose lives she touched.

I never spoke with her about this poem, but have no doubt it would have been as close to her heart as mine. This track is dedicated to her.

Her family have set up a fundraising page in her honour, in aid of Embercombe's continual re-wilding. I am selling this track on Bandcamp and will donate the proceeds to the same cause. Links to the Bandcamp page and original fundraiser are below:

Wild Geese

“Cimetière spatial” est une installation sonore imaginée dans le cadre de l'exposition Cosmopolitiques organisée par le collectif Polynome à Buropolis (Marseille) en avril 2022.

En 1957, la chienne Laïka est le premier être vivant à avoir été mis en orbite autour de la Terre. Cette installation s’inspire de son histoire et de celles des autres animaux décédés dans l’espace pour construire un hommage, un moment de recueillement, un monument funèbre à ces êtres jamais revenus. Laïka, les singes Albert I et Albert II, les araignées Arabella et Anita... nombreux·ses sont celles et ceux qui ont péri lors de missions de recherche sur les effets de l’espace sur le vivant. Sans elles et eux, l’exploration spatiale humaine n’aurait probablement pas eu lieu. 
Cette installation nous invite à réfléchir aux relations entre humains et non-humains, aux exploitations passées et aux possibilités d’empathie et de partage qui s’ouvrent à nous.

Viscosity

Small experimental piece. I found a youtube channel that hosts pieces of classical music, together with recordings of them in MIDI format that you can download. MIDI is the standard format for music production, so you can use these files to make synthesisers play the music. I downloaded the MIDI for Bach's Minuet in G Major and saw what I could make using only drum loops and synths playing the MIDI.
