It's been a brief hiatus, but as they say, "ain't nothin' to it but to do it!". Idle Cellars returns with a new look and more wonderfully chilled and eclectic DJ mixes for your listening pleasure. We have lots going on behind the scenes so watch this space!

We kick things off with renowned recluse and self-proclaimed Record Weasel James Glass! A native Londoner, James fled to the West Coast in the early 90s after a stint in NYC, immediately establishing himself in the local vinyl & DJ scenes with expert-level knowledge of soul, funk, disco, house and more. Thirty years later, James has seen a career that's brought him to play at everything that's worth playing in San Francisco, to successful disco edit label collabs with Wicked founder DJ Garth and Chicago hustler Zernell, to curating the third volume of Dave Lee's Under The Influence compilation series for Z Records and, in the past few years, quite possibly being at least partially responsible for the best outdoor daytime parties the Bay Area has seen in quite some time. James is the opposite of the modern, look-at-me-at-all-times social media DJ, much preferring to toil away weaseling the world's greatest records and occasionally appearing outside his home. 

"Good Feelings" is one for Sunday mornings,..into Sunday afternoons with wistful easy listening joints, proper soul, grooving dub and reggae, heady baroque pop, AOR funk and of course some disco and boogie to liven things up towards the end. Perfect for road trips, sunbathing, a well-rolled blunt or sunsets in warm weather....

James Glass - Good Feelings

De Novo is a psychedelic exploration of epic proportions.  Recorded on classic, vintage equipment in authentic 70's style, Ill Mondo employed dozens of studio musicians and a variety of vocalists to complete the album.  The recordings started with a Kraut-rock influenced studio jam session, and the sessions were edited down before extensive overdubbing; Mellotron flutes and strings blend with live horn and string sections, latin percussion accents against the funky drums and a full choir section complements the space echo guitars.  Each song features a different vocalist with a vast range of influence, including R&B, Folk, and Blues Rock.  The result is as if David Axelrod produced a Funkadelic album with Talking Heads.  Featuring a credit list of over 25 players, expert recording and mixing, Ill Mondo's De Novo is authentic psychedelic music with a funky rock edge that sounds just as at home in 1973 as it does today.

As the day becomes shorter and nights become longer, the change of seasons is happening and movement of environment is changing. Co-founding member of Outpost and Rare Form, Oakland based producer Nackt, delivers us a mix for that perfect moment of change. All the way from that nice warm summer day, to those long funky deep and dark nights. Nackt takes a trip down memory lane with Underground Antenna sharing his vast musical pallet with maintaining the smoothness and only best of vibes. Expect to daydream, float, cry, smile, fly, and die…but only if you feel that way...
The genre crusher, the gentleman, and the professional.

We all need heroes right? Among mine, American director & scriptwriter David Simon holds a pretty good ranking. We owe him some of the best thought-provoking, humanist & politically-conscious drama series of the modern TV era. Starting with the best of all (an unquestionable fact validated by...myself:), The Wire (2002/2008, HBO). 
Resonating all the more with me, music plays an integer part in David's work. That's obvious in his remarkable heartfelt appeal to post-Katrina New Orleans ("Treme", 2010/2013, HBO), but is also a common thread in all his productions.
His latest gem, "Show Me A Hero" (2015, HBO), is no exception to the rule. This mini-series evokes a true story from the late 70's/early 80's, depicting the struggles of a young Mayor in a NYC suburban town, to deal with social & racial cohesion in a stressed budgetary situation. 
Unsurpringly somehow, considering the "deep America" social themes at play here, Bruce Springsteen was a great fit to fill a spot in the show's soundtrack. His beautiful melancholic ballad, "Secret Garden", is omnipresent in each of the the miniseries 4 episodes. Here is a deep, balearic/slo-mo style rework I made of it.
