It's pretty close to impossible to explain in mere words the greatness of The Human Expression but I'll give it a whack. Most folks were introduced to this great Los Angeles group via their inclusion on garage/psych compilations such as Pebbles, Highs In The Mid 60's and Psychedelic Disaster Whirl, and of course I'm no different. Their records are beyond rare and when they do come up for sale, usually top $2,000 or more these days. I once bid $100 for one of their singles back in 1982 and didn't win the auction. So when it comes to the garage rock "holy grail" The Human Expression are near the top of the list.

The Human Expression were Los Angeles based and issued just 3 45's during their short lifetime (1966-1967.) It is quite possible they acted as support group to Love, The Doors and most probably The Seeds. The Human Expression's lead singer Jim Quarles had all Sky Saxon's moves down and then some. One could actually say he out Sky Saxoned Sky Saxon (if that makes any sense?) 

The Human Expression's absolute peak was their psychedelic free for all "Love At Psychedelic Velocity" which I spoke about on this site a few years back. But their second 45 "Optical Sound" is every bit as potent. Musically the song is the polar opposite of "Velocity" where that track was a non-stop train ride to the sun, "Optical Sound" is a slow, brooding almost menacing number that seemed to describe a bad LSD trip. The guitars sound like they were tuned by Sonic Youth, giving the whole song a disoriented feel somewhere in the direction of My Bloody Valentine meets The Ventures. Actually there was another record by a group Chapter Four called "In My Life" (reviewed on this site recently) that had a very similar guitar sound. 

"Calm Me Down" is more in The Seeds vein, this one starts kinda slow then just erupts in a frenzy with Jim Quarles again sounding like he got a hold of some bad LSD or Speed. The group just drive it home until the listener is just as disoriented as the band. High marks to guitarists Jim Foster and Martin Eshleman for their truly inventive playing. 

The Human Expression issued one final 45 in 1967 that coupled "Sweet Child Of Nothingness" and "I Don't Need Nobody", while this 45 has it's merits, it's not quite up to the standard of the first 2 singles. There was a great compilation of all the group's material "Love At Psychedelic Velocity" (Collectables) issued in 1994, but I'm not sure if it is still available. Finding that would be the most cost effective way of hearing this incredible band. In the liner notes Jim Quarles actually claims the Human Expression were first offered the demo of the Steppenwolf mega-hit "Born To Be Wild" by Mars Bonfire but passed on it. 

I always wondered what would have happened if groups like The Human Expression had the recording freedom afforded big name acts such as The Beatles and Rolling Stones. I guess we'll never know, besides the mystery surrounding these psychedelic unknowns makes their recordings that much more special.

The Steppes were originally formed as a powerpop trio in 1982 by brothers John and David Fallon with drummer Eddie GrzybThe Blue Macs". There were five demos that were recorded and given a brilliant review in Melody Maker in March of '83. John and David relocated from Dublin to Los Angeles and added Tim Gilman to the line up. The name of the band was now changed to The Steppes. They recorded 8 songs that were released by Mystic Records in Hollywood February of '84. James Bailey became the drummer shortly after. The Steppes gigged in Los Angeles and around southern California from 1983-1985. John and David Fallon returned to Ireland for several months. Greg Shaw of Bomp Records signed The Steppes to a multi-album deal after The Steppes played one show at Greg's Cavern club in Hollywood near the Capital Records building. The Steppes then recorded Drop of the Creature LP in west Los Angeles in '86. the album was realeased in '87. The Steppes then recorded the Stewdio LP in '87 in Hollywood. The album was released in '88. John Fallon played guitar on a Dementia 13 album called "Disturb the Air" which came out in '88. The same year, The Steppes toured Europe. They played shows in England, Belgium, Germany, and Greece. After the tour, they recorded 'Enquire Within' in London. The Steppes then did 22 shows plus a TV appearance in Greece in '89. The Enquire Within album resulted with a second and larger European tour in October. There were 30 shows in England, Germany, Italy, Greece, Belgium, and Holland. After the tour, they returned to London to record 'Harps and Hammers' in December of '89 and January of '90.

The Haunted were a Canadian garage rock band from Montreal, Quebec. The band was formed by Jurgen Peter (guitar) in 1965, and went on to release several records before finally disbanding in 1971.[1] They were among the first Canadian bands to achieve a level of success in their musical genre.

The Intruders were formed in 1964 by me and Bob "Bub" Evans, a guitarist and singer who lived in an even smaller town than I did. The original lineup was a four-piece consisting of myself on drums and vocals, Bub Evans on guitar and vocals, Terry Predmore (who could actually read music) on saxophone and Paul Crowder playing bass notes on a six-string guitar.

Randy and the Radiants were an American garage rock band from Memphis, Tennessee who were active from 1962-1966 and then again 1976-1984. They were one of the most popular groups in the Memphis area during the 1960s, and though their association with Knox Phillips, son of Sam Phillips, they signed with Sun Records and recorded two singles on the label which became hits in the region, particularly their second release, "My Way of Thinking", which became one of the top hits in the area, reaching #1 on WGMN's charts. The group's work has today become highly regarded amongst garage rock enthusiasts and collectors.

Formed in Derby in 2006, the band grew out of an acoustic duo who played catchy melodic 60's influenced pop tunes, into 4 piece within 6 months. After a year of gigging and songwriting, a three track demo (Flash of Light E.P.) and the self-financed mini-album 'The Bridge' were recorded in between October 2007 March 2008, and sold at gigs to recoup the recording costs. 
The Telephones, continued to play for another year, including support slots with John Power (The La's) and Mark Morris (The Bluetones) before a two year hiatus (where we did other bands !)
Returning in 2012, The Telephones have continued with some notable line-up changes, into the present day band.
The style of the music has always had 60's influences, from both sides of the Atlantic. Others can decide who we sound like. The songs are all ours though.
