The banjo is a musical instrument with African origins, believed to have been developed by enslaved Africans in the Caribbean and later brought to North America. The exact origins of the banjo are unclear, but it is thought to have evolved from similar stringed instruments in West Africa, such as the akonting or ngoni

The banjo first gained popularity in the United States during the 19th century, particularly in the American South, where it became associated with African American music and culture. Early banjos were typically made with gourds for resonators and animal skin for the drumhead, and were played using a technique called frailing or clawhammer, in which the player's fingernail or a piece of bone is used to strike the strings

In the late 19th century, the banjo underwent a period of rapid evolution, with improvements in materials and construction leading to the development of more sophisticated and versatile instruments. One important development was the introduction of the resonator, a wood plate behind the open drum that increased the volume and projection of the banjo's sound. Another was the development of the five-string banjo, which added a shorter fifth string that allowed for more complex playing techniques

The origins of the 5-string banjo are unclear, but it is believed to have been developed by African American musicians in the mid-19th century. The addition of the fifth string, which is shorter than the other four strings and is tuned to a higher pitch, allowed for a wider range of notes and made it easier to play certain melodies and chord progressions

One of the early pioneers of the 5-string banjo was Joel Sweeney, a white musician from Virginia who popularized the instrument in the mid-1800s. Sweeney is often credited with introducing the shorter fifth string, as well as other improvements to the banjo, such as the addition of frets and the use of metal strings

However, it's important to note that the development of the 5-string banjo was likely a collaborative effort among many musicians, both black and white, and its exact origins are difficult to trace. Nonetheless, Sweeney's contributions were significant and helped to establish the modern form of the instrument that is still popular today

During the early 20th century, the banjo became a popular instrument in a variety of musical styles, including jazz, blues, and country music. The instrument was played by a number of famous musicians, including Earl Scruggs, who popularized a three-finger picking style that became known as the Scruggs style

In recent years, the banjo has experienced a resurgence of popularity, particularly in the realm of folk and Americana music. Today, the banjo is played in a wide range of styles and genres, and is appreciated for its unique sound and cultural significance in musical storytelling

sometimes I think we lose track of the treasures that are at our fingertips as we get wrapped up in some amorphous thought of the future. Put another way "stop and smell the roses"  it is what we do and experience along the way that actually makes up our life ..little things that in retrospect were big things..the things that actually matter when you look back    so try and make these things appreciated in real time and not some retrospective memory at the end of your life

Ken wrote this song (K2 and the Three, and K2 and the Four) a little more than three decades ago, and recorded it with a former band in '95. It's about being a guy who recovers a woman from a failed relationship, even though he doesn't expect it to last. He got the term from an episode of the '90s hit Roseanne, when someone quipped after one of the daughters had been dumped by a bad boy, only to find a new boyfriend, that "it's not gonna last. He's her transition man." So, Ken, finding himself in a similar situation, picked up the term and ran with it.

  His original recording was a harder rock sounding song we used a template, but only loosely. Josh Clary (Entheogenic Psychonaught) tried to answer the question, what would Flea play on this? JJ Terrell came up with the fonky funk keys. Tez (Llanpsych) and Stephen (TexMex Shaman) came up with with the lightning and fire guitar leads. Ken, of course, did the driving drumming and essential percussion. Chris (cgManess) added the really solid foundational rhythm guitar. He also sings this one. On top of that, he also did a fantastic job of producing and mixing it, as well as coming up with the art.

Humanization process

In Memoriam and as a Lasting Tribute to the Late Great, Allen Bailey....Gone, but Never Forgotten. This is a wonderful Allen Bailey Original Tune that I just loved from the moment I first heard it. I sent some ideas for a Collab contribution to Allen, and he graciously re-recorded to allow me to better integrate my vocals, guitar, drums, etc... We liked how it sounded, and then Gabe Vanore of VanGabriel Production took this one to another level for us. Thanks, Allen and Gabe for pushing this one down the rails, and for letting me ride this rather magical train. I feel genuinely privileged to have been a contributor on this joyful project.

Jörg S. born in Cologne, from youth on, was fascinated by all kinds of art, so he taught himself the saxophone very early. Nowadays flutes of all kind are also part of the equipment, as are jaw harps, percussion, bass, guitars and keyboards.
He was and is always involved in many band projects and session events.
In the 80s he was a saxophonist in the Adam Noidlt Intermission Orchestra with gigs in Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Basel. Very early on he also worked as a writer with live readings in the Cologne area and was a painter with large formats for many years, all in addition to his job as a graphic designer. Now, retired, devoted solely to music: home recording with the platform of choice, Soundcloud and global collaborations.
