ADAM IN THE GARDEN

blinded by the gaseous beauty 
of this mother planet 
i descend into a layer of existence 
thick as any anywhere; 
and in the crossfire of her knowing eyes
i can barely locate the shooters
whose arrows laugh hysterically at me
through the graveyard mist of my passion. 

i am adam in the garden,
between the gutter and the stars.
i have been warned not to bite the apple
but I could not help myself.

she is a world torn to shreds,
 a canvas desecrated
by a madman's razor;
 and ripped page by page 
from every smile that suggests deceit… 
from every testimony that buys revision, 
from every fanaticism that fills our insatiable tanks,
and drives us to the edge. 
                 
so you are the intoxicant, 
and i am defenseless, lost, alone 
and scratching like a cat 
at the floor legs of your skin. 
looking for relief, 
you are the salve to satisfy
the incoherence of my itch, 
a wayward star 
in an incontrovertibly
 screwed universe,
