Our next instalment in the podcast series comes courtesy of a talented young artist from the fast rising Australian underground scene. Having regularly been seen DJing alongside big hitters like https://soundcloud.com/shedbug, https://soundcloud.com/rudolf-c and https://soundcloud.com/mallgrab this year saw his first track released on vinyl via the infamous https://soundcloud.com/salt-mines crew.

Here, Hymns takes us on a journey deep into the depths of dusty Melbourne basement clubs, ranging from spaced out ambient acid right through to crunchy lofi techno. This one is fully loaded with 100% certified heaters from start to finish and they are all original productions by the man himself!!! We've had this bad boy on repeat for the past week here at MWU, so it comes highly recommended that you waste no time in getting yourselves involved.....

South London is a creative hub that’s been spitting out talent for years. @SebWildblood is a product of this bubble and may even be considered a pioneer, as his @ChurchUK party series and record label were established back in 2012. As someone who loves discovering new music, one record label was obviously not enough. Last year, Wildblood established the @Coastal-Haze imprint alongside good friend and fellow DJ, Hollick, with a focus on full length cassette tapes. Even more recently, Seb launched another project called @AllMyThoughts and it has seen its first three releases already.

Outside of his phenomenal knack for being able to find music from emerging as well as established artists, Seb Wildblood has made quite a name for himself on the production front as well. With a number of EPs and singles released over the last several years, he’s managed to craft a distinctive, moody, percussive sound that has caught the ears of many a listener and DJ alike. Last year’s 'Jazz Vol.1' EP on Church really catapulted him into the spotlight and he’s managed to go from strength to strength, recently releasing the spectacular ':~^' mini-LP on Omena.

We managed to catch up with the busy man of the moment and ask him some questions for the latest instalment of our MIXED BY/ series. Read the full interview in the link provided!

Tom VR swooped into our scopes with his Frissons release on Seb Wildblood's All My Thoughts label a couple of month's back. “Well, I’ve been travelling a lot. Italy, the UK and Japan were my highlights. More holidays than work so I got lucky. Playing music for people I would never ever dare to call ‘work’ anyways. Besides I set up my new studio above Renate club here in Berlin. Maybe this was a bit of work then? Building absorbers, renovating and stuff to make the room sound good, you know. So I’m looking forward to next winter season where I should be spending a lot time inside by then. Wait, no heating installed yet. Damn.

The mix was recorded at my Neukölln apartment. I was using the Standard setup: My beloved 10 year old Rane Empath Rotary Mixer, a bunch of CDJs as well as the classic Technics 1210. Another amp from the 80s and one day I got some older Canton speakers. Music all went into the tascam recorder. So that is that.

The idea of a dj mix, that is still a tough one. After thinking about it for months (or seconds for that matter) I just told myself ‘it’s basically one hour of dance music’ … right? So I went through my digital and analog shelves and went for a selection of music I like to play and (rarely but it happens) dance to these days. A lot of upcoming stuff I made myself plus some soon-to-be-released music and some arpy trance classic back from 1993 as a bonus. So yeah a bit of everything, including sloppy mixes. I tried hard not to get you bored. Maybe we should call this mix ‘The Idea Of A Trance Part 7’?”

“What comes after travelling? Right on, travelling. After some more vacational days I’ll have the honour to play some shows around including Amsterdam and finally Robert Johnson, which is my definition of a club ever since. And god. I love to DJ. The motivation gets better each and every year. No kidding. On the producer side of things I have 2 more EPs coming your way early fall. Both on my own labels ‘Frank Music’ and ‘Fine’. One of them is called “Giovanni Frizzante” and it does what it says on the tin. Italo time. Before you ask – yeah you will actually hear it in the mix. Also a bit proud that Mr. Prins Thomas provided another Diskomiks for us.”

OP 𓅛 mix 6 - Nicolas Jaar - (BBC Essential Mix 2012)

Although his last record for Hypercolour – Who Knows (Where Love Lives) – is still very much owning dancefloors worldwide, Last Magpie is back with another sound package on sister imprint, Losing Suki. This time we find the mysterious producer in slightly heavier, bassier mode, toying with deep house tropes and myriad UK influences in equal measure.

‘1995’ opens the EP with darting, brightly coloured synths shooting in all directions from a churning percussive clatter that runs up the middle. Bass stabs keep things nice and airy feeling, and fractured vocals bring the all-important human and hooky element to the track. Despite being restless and itchy, it still manages to retain a certain house-y soul.

Then, ‘Hypno’ channels some dark energy through woodblock hits, STL style, as ripples of a human voice roll to the edge of the track and beyond. All tightly coiled and kinetic, it’s an eerie and spacious track to take the mood of any dancefloor down a notch or two.

Next, ‘Roots’ is a subtle take on a tried and tested garage template with swirling, backward sounding LFOs snaking around beneath sharpened chord stabs and a touch of the Balearic synth work he is fast becoming known for.

Finally, ‘Fallen’ turns right in on itself. Introverted and sombre, wallowing and watery, it comes from deep under the surface with only the thinnest rays of light permeating a skeletal percussive rhythm. The occasional melodic snowflakes that also rain across the face of the arrangement are bliss and beautiful in equal measure. Though Last Magpie is adept at crafting catchy bangers, this one might just be his most assured track to date.
