From its humble origins releasing material by a new generation of ska and reggae enthusiasts it has evolved to be a reputable brand including renowned international acts like The Aggrolites, The New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble and David Hillyard & The Rocksteady 7 and also The Starlites, Soweto, The Pepper Pots, Root Diamoons…. Brixton Records owns two sub-labels (Silver Bullets and Guns Of Brixton Records) and also acts as concert promoter and band manager.

Thirty five years ago, Lee Thompson introduced an entire generation to Ska music when Madness exploded from nowhere. Now, along with founder-member Mark Bedford, the two are moonlighting to introduce those authentic Ska and Reggae rhythms that burst out of Jamaica in the mid to late 1960’s to a whole new audience. Recorded at The Ironworks Studio in Brighton and co-produced by Mike Pelanconi aka Prince Fatty (A Tribe Called Quest, Kula Shaker, Graham Coxon), the finished record is a tribute to the long-lasting legacy of the music that inspired them as teenagers. Mike Pelanconi’s production perfectly re-creates the live Caribbean vibe on tracks inspired by the likes of Desmond Dekker and John Holt, alongside impressive versions of King Curtis’ Soul Serenade and Lalo Schifrin’s Mission Impossible theme. The album also benefits from the guidance of Dave Robinson, co-founder of Stiff Records (Madness, Elvis Costello, Ian Dury) and a man with a cast-iron connection to Lee Thompson and Madness. The lead single from the album is a clever and fitting cover of Dekker’s mighty, mystical Fu Man Chu, which is given a vocal transfusion from reggae hitmaker Bitty Mclean.

From 1983-87 Patrick Meads was label manager at the legendary British reggae record label, Trojan Records compiling and releasing a clutch of best-selling retrospective artist and compilation albums featuring Trojan's classic reggae music from the 60's & 70's which, in turn, led to Patrick's formation of Music Like Dirt in 1986.

In 2019 Patrick felt the time was to make some changes and, after a long search to find the right music publisher to continue representing the fantastic artists and writers music in the catalogues, found Sentric Music and sold Big World Publishing and Music Like Dirt to them in November 2019.
